Raducanu Routed By Carle In Madrid

Emma Raducanu suffered another crushing loss in Madrid first round, a 62 62 drubbing from unheralded Maria Carle of Argentina.

Carle is largely unknown by tennis observers as she was a good though undersized ITF junior (finished at no. 9 in the world) without a major weapon other than a feisty, fighting spirit. Carle played college tennis at University of Georgia for one season (2018-2019) and is now grinding her way into the WTA.

Raducanu is fit and healthy now but she still can’t recreate her identity as Grand Slam champion. The 21 year old is ranked 221 and has a mediocre 9-7 match record on the year.

Carle, a 5-ft-five-inch spark plug, is 24 years old and ranked 82.

It’s hard to believe how the fortunes of Raducanu have crashed after her epic triumph at US Open three years ago. You have to wonder how many more losses like this one to the Maria Carles of the tennis world, Emma will be able to endure before she decides to pull the plug and pursue other interests. Carle will play Ostapenko in Madrid second round.

Scoop – Emma’s 21 going on 22 and has lost a year to injuries. Bit soon to dismiss her. She has to find a balance between playing too much and playing too little.

I expected a comment from you on Sabalenka’s comprehensive denigration of the sport which has earned her millions of dollars. IMO she should return the lot.

Catherine I was a believer in Raducanu but she’s been stagnated for two years now. She has trained and worked hard and expected to be an impact elite player again but the results never came. I think she’s having serious doubts. Of course she can never be written off but there is no hint of any indication she can win a big tournament again. Yes it was surprising to see Sabalenka throw her sport under the bus as she did. You would think she would respect it much more. Perhaps there are some hidden reasons and motives for her to have said what she did. I’ve always wondered about her US Open final loss to Coco and the dumb tactics she used.
