Title of my Safin Book

Image may contain: 1 person, closeup

I need your help. I am considering different options for the title of my next book about Marat Safin.

At first the title was to be “Facing Safin” but something is pulling me to arrange the book like the Marcelo Rios book which was titled “Marcelo Rios: The Man We Barely Knew.”

A reader sent a note this week about my Rios book: “By the way your book on Marcelo Rios is great. Man I have read and reread the Rios book several times! Very interesting book and also hilarious. Cant wait to read the Safin book, where can i get it?

I had been dabbling with the title change for a while but that note changed my mind to do it. The similar quality of content is there and I want to be more creative and abstract with the composition.

The titles I like so far are:

Marat Safin: The Tennis Super Power

Marat Safin: The Man Who Had It All

Marat Safin: Too Much Talent

So dear readers I ask, which title do you like? Or do you have any other ideas?

If I really like your idea I will send you a copy of one of my other books and a Sarasota Open hat.

Thank you!

Marat Safin: the mad genius of tennis
Marat Safin: the mad man of tennis
Marat Satin: the fiery Russian with the game to match

Not sure about my title suggestions but I’m feeling confident Fritz will have a good French Open.

With you on Fritz Bobby. He’s ready for his major breakout.

Scoop – I’m afraid I’m not good at titles except in a negative way, so although your suggestions don’t really speak to me I can’t offer anything better. And I’m not too familiar with Safin’s career.

Only – Safin is Russian – do you know Winston Churchill’s quote about Russia ? Marat obviously intrigues you – maybe a title which reflects that.

(there’s no copyright on titles, as you probably know, so you can always swipe someone else’s title, or adapt it)

Your title for Rios’ book was good – short and appropriate.

Catherine, I’m surprised you missed the unique Safin meteoric career. At one point Vince Spadea even said Safin was physically better a player than even Federer but mentally he wasn’t tough enough. I’m sure you saw his two most famous wins vs Pete at US Open and Fed at Aus Open SF 9-7 in the fifth. But as many epic jaw dropping performances Safin had, he had just as many ordinary disappointing bad losses. On top of that he was a fascinating character and personality, very handsome fella, very intelligent and the crowds loved him through it all. Safin was the first to introduce the next level of super power tennis, leading the way for Delpo, Berdych, etc.

Scoop – I didn’t see much live tennis after around 1991/2 until years later when I picked it up again after finishing another job, so I missed entire careers 🙂

I catch up on Youtube if they are players I’m interested in but it’s not the same, obviously. I knew about Safin but I never saw his best matches. Have to rely on your stories for these players. I just thought of Safin as a mad/heroic Russian out of one of those classic Russian novels. A cavalry officer. He probably would have been killed in duel.

    Marat being Marat

Shame about Fritz. He should have won in staights as he won the 1st and 3rd sets and led 3-1 in the 2nd set.

-Tennis Tartar: The Way of Safin-
Happens to be his rediscovered roots and current political post. Best of all the raw meat double entendre for his notorious passions and game.
-The Unmaking of Marat:The Tallest Number One- embodies his complexities

Are we getting a new thread for RG ? More withdrawals today I see.

  • Hartt · May 28, 2018 at 7:54 am

I like Hurley’s suggestion: Marat Safin, the mad genius of tennis.

  • catherine · May 28, 2018 at 7:59 am

Hartt – I think the best titles are those which don’t give too much away, which is why I like the Rios one.

But really, only Scoop knows what’s right because he’s the only one who knows what’s in the book.
