Roland Garros Fasten Your Seatbelts

ernie

Ernests Gulbis won his first ATP main draw match in eons today, beating Gilles Muller in four sets. Gulbis has won four matches in a row since qualies. Earlier this year and late in 2017 Gulbis was losing to unknown players ranked well outside 300 like Benjamin Hassan and Manuel Gulnard and Zsombor Piros. His last ATP main draw match win was at US Open last year beating Alessandro Gianessi. Gulbis was ranked 91 at the time.

Corentin Moutet, the little lefty Frenchman, showed again he’s a force to be reckoned albeit in a small package. The sub six footer manhandled Ivo Karlovic in straight sets yesterday, his second win this year over the giant. For a teenager to subdue Dr. Ivo twice in four months the first two times playing the legend, you know good things are in store for Moutet in the future.

Taylor Fritz lost to Guido Andreozzi who is a heavy hitter from Argentina. I have seen this power player live twice beating Kozlov in straight sets at US Open qualies last year and 2015. He simply overpowered Fritz with a stunning display that not many expected. Fritz did nothing wrong, Andreozzi just played A plus power tennis and kept his nerve at the end and came up with some incredible plays.

Yoshihito Nishioka used up every ounce of heart and soul and desperation to fight with Verdasco but the heavyweight vs featherweight aspect of this clash took itโ€™s toll in the end. Nishioka cried and had to be helped off the court. He really needed the points. Verdasco was one of his lefty heroes. Emotional ending to a marathon epic 75 in the fifth.

Robin Haase attempted shenanigans to stall the match vs Goffin who he lead 64 64 but Goffin took the next two 64 61 with Haase trying to postpone the match due to darkness. Goffin showed top ten level magic and Haase had no answers despite Paul Haarhuis lending support. Goffin bageled Haase in the fifth.

Bernie Tomic had an ideal first round main draw opponent in the journeyman Marco Trungelliti but blew it 46 46 75 46. Tomic wore Lotto in qualies and changed to Lacoste for main draw should have handled the road warrior from Argentina who reportedly drove nine hours from Spain to take advantage of his lucky loser option into the main draw. Trungelliti will now be a household name in the tennis world because of this unique story. His previous claim to fame was for wearing a wacky pink shirt several years ago.

After winning her match yesterday vs Errani 26 62 63, Alize Cornet took a swipe at Garbine Muguruzua, โ€œKasatkina is incredibly open, super simpatico, and funny. Sadly, Muguruza is the opposite.โ€

Where is Leander Paes? He has not played in over a month since his Davis Cup doubles win. Not in the main draw doubles in Paris and I was told in Delray Beach by his coach Sanjay Singh that he has a secret partner for mixd in Paris. We will see…

Wawrinka out to GGL. Tsitsipas beats Taberner in four to set up a second round showdown with Thiem.

Great job by me on winning my bet that Haider-Maurer would lose in straights. That first set TB was a little dicey. The key was betting on straight sets since that’s where the money was to be made. But I felt good and it paid off.

You know what that means? Ol’ Duke is gonna enjoy himself some Memorial Day strippers!

    Have a nice holiday T-P!

Oh wow – why did Cornet say that ? She must have irritated Garbine in a big way. Unfortunately I find it easy to believe although Alize herself is not the easiest of persons to get along with at times.

Are they down to play each other ? I’ll have a look. Imagine the handshake ๐Ÿ™‚

RG highlights on Youtube aren’t worth clicking the mouse for. 2 mins ? And that’s men and women. Maybe they might give us 3 or 4 mins from the Finals ๐Ÿ™‚

    Andrea Petkovic bt Mladenovic !!!!

That’s the first match Andrea’s won for a while.

Duke, give our best regards to Marat if you run into him ๐Ÿ™‚ Good prediction. You have to worry about the thrown set but you handicapped it correctly.

Catherine, the translated quote is in the article. Cornet is the no. 1 rabblerouser and drama queen and injury faker in tennis today. She’s fun, funky and f…(fill in the blank).

Rain stops play leaving Nadal in mid-air, Sharapova not getting on at all and Heather Watson winning v Oudin with a very nice handshake to finish ๐Ÿ™‚

The Great on his way back Tomic,( read that here before) lost to the lucky loser that drove 10 hours from Barcelona to Paris after Kyrgios pulled out.
    Yeah, heโ€™s back!!

    Back to quailes Bernie

Hsieh out first round, lost to Peterson, she had a good run last year beating Konta. Playing doubles with new partner Petkovic. Curious to see if Schwartzman can pull off a nice run to break into top ten. Ferrer goes down in five to this new kid Munar who keeps popping up with good wins. Youzhny vs Jaziri goes five for the Jazman. A lot of complaining about Serena not getting a seed but her form this year has been mediocre at best. She does not merit a WC on her past laurels. We live in a what have you done for me lately world. Serena has to prove herself again. A lot of other players have earned their seeds. Serena has to go out and prove she can still compete at the highest level.

  • catherine · May 29, 2018 at 2:17 am

Serena deserves a WC, but not a seeding. That seems fair to me. She’s only getting what a number of other players have had in the past. Now it’s up to her. Could be tough first match.

Petko/Hsieh interesting. Andrea’s played a lot of doubles, including Olympics.

Gloomy weather in London and just hope no rain in Paris because there’s a packed program today.

Il pleut, il pleut, il pleut……..

  • Scoopmalinowski · May 29, 2018 at 7:37 am

If Serena is begging for a seed or is angry she was not seeded it’s a sign of weakness. Serena at her best doesn’t care who she plays, as she knows she is the lion queen. Its Serenas job to get back to top form. Shes had plenty of time already.

Marten Fucsovic after Geneva title is proving to be imposing baseliner taking out Pospisal today in 3. Good longshot pick?

  • catherine · May 29, 2018 at 11:51 am

Scoop – I never heard that Serena herself had asked for a seeding. The quotes were all about what other people thought.

  • Scoop Malinowski · May 29, 2018 at 12:40 pm

Good point Catherine, with all the yapping it almost seems like she spoke up about it too. If she didn’t, credit to her.

  • catherine · May 29, 2018 at 12:42 pm

And Serena wins v Krystina Pliskova. SS.

Serena wears a shiny black space-suit.
