Sam Querrey Shows Snarl vs Smyczek in Delray Battle

12717300_10207035083848785_8985683437354053219_nSan Querrey may be transforming from the gentle giant passive Californian into … Snarling Sam? There have been some hints of fire and fury in Sam during this heated three set night match quarterfinal vs grinder Tim Smyczek in Delray Beach. A couple of Smee fans apparently had some words with the usually impeccably mannered Sam. After he lost the first set 67 Sam has implored himself on with several mild come ons and soft fist pumps after clutch shots. I’ve also noticed Sam glaring and staring briefly at Tim before his service points – nothing remotely close to an ‘in your face’ type stare or non verbal taunt but still they were clear stares and glares with a trace of malice in the eyes and a showing of teeth like a wolf. For Sam Querrey this is shocking stuff. This is major swag. This is atypical ferocity and machismo. Or perhaps these two gents just happen to not like each other for whatever reason(s). Perhaps Sam is finally tired of all the media knocks about his underachieving results and has reached his breaking point and is now coming to terms with summoning and releasing his inner beast mode (which we have never seen before) as the 28 year old veteran is at his prime right now. I don’t know about you but I see and sense some changes in Sam’s intensity and court demeanor. At the moment it appears Snarling Sam approach is not quite working as Tim has just broken Sam to take a 3-2 lead in the third set.

Just saw Kyrgios out of match v Wawrinka with bad back – not for the first time, niggling injuries. It’s a bit worrying for a young man only 20.
Are these guys overplaying ? Is it the style, the surfaces ?

Also, interested in your comment Dan about Spadea coming from the wrong side of the tracks and the implications etc. Not too many top players fall into that category. From an earlier era and on the women’s side I can really only think of Rosie Casals – Hispanic, public parks, faced a bit of discrimination early on.

Kyrgios has Davis Cup next week – I can see how part of his focus and energies are on the tie vs USA and not all on Stan – Davis Cup scheduling always causes results like this in tourneys that are played just before Davis Cup week – Tomic plays Dolgopolov today in Acapulco SF – can easily see Tomic cruising to a flat loss today as Davis Cup next week is of far more importance than the Acapulco SF —

As a yoga teacher, not surprised Kyrgios has bad back. His posture is lousy, hunched over, wonder how much stretching and core work he does. I think more and more you see players from other side of tracks making it in tennis. The obvious examples are the Williams sisters, but there’s the New Yorker Ecuadorian player who’s name I can’t remember. The Mayotte brothers and the Blake brothers weren’t wealthy and certainly Agassi wasn’t either. But I met a mother from Rochester NY down in Florida last week who’s moved with her son there who’s 15 and she spends $8000 a month on just his private coach and physical training.

Look there were other reasons besides social class why Vince was an outcast on the tour. For one, he doesn’t drink or take drugs and at least the former is pretty big practice among male players. I remember Vince saying one American player of his era was a pothead.

Scoop – Yes, I get that. Expect (hope) to see K alive and well at DC. But he has had back problems in the past. Maybe tension spasms ?

Let’s kibosh fritzmania until he has a real win over a tenner or a qf/SF showing at a slam….250’s with challenger level competition does not merit striking up the band..

The inside scoop from Dan is great – that’s what TP should focus on as the quasi-insiders of the tour…..and less speculations about which juniors may pr may not win a big one..

Vince was shy also – I Biofiled him in the early 2000s and he was a shy outsider who didn’t seem to have one friend on the tour – I think there are a lot of guys like that actually – Baghdatis told me he had no friends on the tour – several players said this – it’s just too competitive and you can’t trust anyone – Kyrgios will be fine – Prediction: he’s going to win both of his singles in DC next week –

John McEnroe said 2 years ago that Kyrios was going to have back problems because of his posture, he really needs to work on core or else he is going to have chronic issues. McEnroe said this while Kyrios was fine without issues, but spotted it watching him play.

    Thiem. Dominating every tournament.

At this time I would make Thiem one of the top four contenders for Roland Garros – Djokovic Federer Thiem Nadal –

Re Kyrgios and his posture it does strike me that quite a lot of top players, past and present, have problems in this area. Is it perhaps because when they are young and developing more attention is paid to technicalities of the game than general and specific conditioning of bodies as they grow ?
Just a thought – I know nothing about physiology except as a lay observer.
