The second set tiebreaker was 10-8. I didn’t see the match – because I was doing interviews – but those details tell it all – Felix is the real deal. The insiders here are praising his talent and techniques but the other word that keeps popping up in the conversations about Felix is how well he behaves and how humble he is despite the extraordinary talent.

The Thai girl Punnin Kovapitukted once again impressed with a hard-earned 63 63 win vs a Canadian – if that score looks routine trust me it was anything but. Every game was a battle of a lot of long long rallies though both girls have the ability to strike a winner when they want – the key game was the seventh game of first set with Punnin ahead 4-2 – there had to be at least ten deuces and possibly fifteen. Punnin ended up winning it for the hold and had 30-love in the next game but the Canadian fought back to win it – then Punnin closed it out with her lefty serve – the second set was also a fight. The big one is the tomorrow’s quarter with the #2 seed who she beat 75 in a practice set last year (from 25 down) – the Babolat rep Will who I met on day one said he’s going to stop over to look at Punnin tomorrow about a possible sponsorship as Punnin loves Babolat and does not have any kind of sponsorship agreement – though I believe her talent and play deserve a consideration.

Nathalie Tauziat is here coaching a Canadian girl Bianca Andreescu  – we did a nice Facing Steffi interview – remember Nathalie was a Wimbledon finalist (lost to Novotna) and also the oldest woman to break into the top three – which she did at age 32. Nathalie said she lost Graf all seventeen times they played and the one time she almost beat her relentless rains for two days cancelled the match. I also spoke with Hana Mandlikova about her duels with Graf and she beat her once at Roland Garros. Hana’s daughter Elli Mandlik lost in the 14s (to Margaryta Bilokin) but she sure did look like a heckuva player in defeat – but then again I’m in awe of just about every one of these players – how hard they hit and how well they move and how long and physical so many rallies are.

Daniel Vacek – the three time doubles grand slam winner was here again – he told me he played Hewitt in the first round of the Aussie Open shortly after Hewitt won his first title in Adelaide at sixteen – it was a five set war – Vacek won the first two sets and prevailed in five and it was his fitness that saved him from the relentless Hewitt. Vacek said he started tennis late – after soccer – at age ten and half and the Czech system wasn’t exactly logical and fair but he still managed to make it against all odds – interestingly he said he had a big serve and forehand and would protect the backhand but then a good coach taught him an effective slice and his backhand became very good which hurt his forehand side. Vacek won two of his three majors with Kafelnikov and was top 30 in singles

Andrea Temesvari shared her Facing Graf memories which all you Graf fans will love to read about – and also details about how she was asked to play doubles by Navratilova at Roland Garros and their new partnership resulted in a major doubles title with a blowout win over Graf and Gabriela Sabatini – the story about this match could make a good magazine article on its own. Temesvari’s girl Dalma Galfi is still cruising along in singles and doubles and her fourteen year old daughter isn’t here but could be ready for next year’s Eddie Herr. 12289660_10206529448688222_7002464043687555812_nNOTES: I caught up with Christian Bergstrom who played Johnnymac four times and lost all four – he said John liked to complain about line calls and also sometimes about opponents – in his case John complained about how much noise his shoes were making while returning serve – Johnnymac is the only player who ever complained about Bergstrom’s shoes being too noisy. The match of the day was Hanna Chang vs Kylie McKenzie in the girls 18s – So Cal’s Chang was ahead 52 in the third but then Arizona’s Kylie turned into a baseline wall and didn’t miss – the quality and power of this tennis was just shocking – Kylie won 75 in the third and Hanna’s coach after said it was the best she ever played but Kylie owns her and it’s about the fifth time she beat her though this was the first time that it wasn’t a routine scoreline – Vacek said a player that really impressed him was the fourteen year old Russian Amanda Anisimova – tall blonde Russian who makes the sport look easy – that is what the masters like Vacek says stands out to his eye – the ones who can make it look easy — martin Damm beat a Thai kid Credit Chaiyarin in straight sets – Credit had beaten the top seed from Serbia in straight sets in the previous round and the Thai is the most visually distinctive player here – with his long ponytail braid that falls below his waist line –

Why can’t this be found streaming anywhere? Felt that way about the Zoo finals as well.

The Kalamazoo finals was live streamed – I saw Tiafoe survive the five setter vs Kozlov – but not sure if Herr is live streamed – will find out today — I hope for tennis fans sake that it is because the quality of tennis here is just sensational – in all divisions —

Interesting reading for someone who was around tennis for the Graf generation and before.

By the way – re your comments on the girls’ matches – are there any young players you’ve seen who display an all court game rather than predominantly baseline style ?

Thank you Ashoke – hope to see you later today – sorry I lost you yesterday – I had to go over to the girls doubles match to interview Temesvari which turned out fantastic – she is a brilliant tennis mind and very nice person –

Catherine – Ingrid Neal likes to attack and get to net but she lost to Claire Liu who is coached by Adam Peterson in Carson – I saw Liu play she is solid at the backline – and just fifteen – she even won two rounds at qualis of US Open last year – to get to net is a lost art – the game is just too fast now – BTW only one American is into the 18s quarterfinals – Ulises Blanch – he faces #4 seed Alex De minaur of Australia – who I saw play and he is a skinny kid but a BIG hitter – Felix – Kecmanovic – Ruud – still alive –

Scoop, I guess I missed the final. The quality and drama of the matches at that level are often inspiring. The theatre of sport and all that. I appreciate your coverage as well.

It’s Ingrid Neel, and the NYT article on her back when she was 12 was about how she played like her idol, Johnny Mac, but I’ve heard her game is more conventional since she chose to train at IMG’s. Who knows even is she trained with Johnny Mac if she would’ve continued to be a net-rusher. All I know is its nice to see Rafter in the IPTl rushing the net and using his quickness at age 40 I guess and his net skills after so much baseline tennis.

How did Felix do in the US Open juniors? Do they call him Felix the Cat?

Thanks Rob – it’s some of the best tennis I’ve ever seen – no tanking – every ball is all out – these kids wants it – it’s just amazing to see a kid the size of a pipsqueek with perfect form and footwork – getting behind the ball and using his body weight into each shot – I can’t believe under ten year old kids have all the shots and perfect form – I just can’t believe it – the coaching today is excellent – and the kids dedicating to tennis is also commendable – I enjoy this Eddie Herr as much as ATP tournaments – I am serious –

Felix lost at US Open juniors to T Paul in a marathon – he smoked the kid today Shibing Wu (63 60) who had beaten molleker – also De minaur won over Ulises Kecmanovic lost – Galfi beat Claire Liu in the girls 18s 6364 – and Kylie mcKenzie killed a Russian 60 62 – Kyle is absolutley on fire after beating Hanna Chang yesterday from 25 down in the third – she is ON FIRE she is killing the ball and not missing at all – Punnin lost in the 12s to the 2 seed Noa Krznanic 62 63 but I didn’t see the match as I was playing doubles at Longboat Key Club –

  • Dan Markowitz · December 4, 2015 at 3:28 pm

Scoop, quit playing tennis, your job is to watch it 24/7! But brother, do you have the life. Just talking with Vince, his special lessons on the forehand will be coming out in January on the Tennis Channel. He said it was grueling, 2 12-hour day and he said they fed him like 100 forehands and he smoked every one of them. I think Vince is ready for you, Scoop. I’ll tell him to go looking for you on Longboat Key.

Felix Auger-Aliassime did win the boys doubles at the USO, along with another young Canadian player, Denis Shapovalov. They won over 2 American players, Brandon Holt and Riley Smith. Felix and Denis were also part of the team that won the Junior Davis Cup this fall.
Felix the Cat sounds like a great nickname.

  • Rob · December 5, 2015 at 4:38 pm

A Quebec journalist who writes tennis was following the cdn juniors – she was with Felix after the Paul match. He wouldn’t leave the courts. He went back with his coach and was ghosting through points until late.

  • Scoop Malinowski · December 5, 2015 at 6:50 pm

Hartt you called it before BG gets his hands on the nickname 🙂

  • Scoop Malinowski · December 5, 2015 at 6:52 pm

Nice tidbit of info Rob – I have seen Felix every day at least five times – he’s always got his Babolat bag and out and about – going to hit or watching another Canadian play or chatting with someone – he is very low key and humble but he just has a way of standing out and arresting your eye – he stands very tall and regal like a prince –
