Williams Dominate Womens’ Tennis And Wimbledon Again

It’s been a while – two years to be exact – but the Williams sisters are back in the driver’s seat again of the WTA after a duration of injuries, ailments and falling short. Serena returned to the grand slam winners circle for the 14th time by defeating Aga Radwanska and equaled her older sister’s total of five Wimbledons.

Then later in the day the Williams proved they can still rule in doubles as they captured that title too, punctuated by an ace by Venus.

Said Richard Williams about the singles title, “This is the most important tournament that Serena would ever win. Because Serena didn’t think she’d ever play tennis again. She told me so.”

Serena cut her foot on glass at a restaurant, suffered blood clots in her lung, and also endured a gathering of blood under the skin of her stomach. She missed a year of action, returning in June 2011 after her ranking plummeted to #175.

After falling short at her first four majors since her 2011 comeback, Serena is back on top again, sporting her trademark game, lethal serving and returning, and a new controlled intensity which did not allow for any controversial outbursts of rage, such as the episodes at the U.S. Open which upset and horrified many tennis fans.

Serena, now 30, looks to have mastered herself with a new desire and drive to prove that she can compete and win in the right way. And she did exactly that at Wimbledon this year.

Definitely a sweet win for Serena, she was serving and playing lights out. I credit A-Rad for her fightback – I was hoping A-Rad would pull the upset because I love her craftiness and game. I think A-Rad can even improve even more, weave some Rios into her game to wrong foot opponents and keep them guessing.

That’s something Federer did today – he remained unpredictable, even when ahead 30-15 I can’t believe that Murray didn’t feel a doubt that maybe it wasn’t good enough just to be up. I hope A-Rad becomes a few months better this summer and makes it deep at the US Open.

All credit to Serena Williams. She really owned her shots and did everything better than A-Rad, and that turns into trophies.

If Serena is not in A plus form like she is now, Radwanska wins this event. When Serena plays at this high level though, I don’t think anyone can beat her. At her best she is simply invincible. We’ll see if anyone can step up and threaten her but I don’t see Stosur, Azarenka or Radwanska doing it. Serena is still driven and I think this win redeems those two US Open episodes with the lineswoman and chair umpire, Serena showed a lot of class in overcoming those two lowpoints as well as the health issues.
