Tennis Needs A Ryder Cup

By Scoop Malinowski

There’s something very special and original about the USA vs Europe Ryder Cup, how passionate and intense the competitors and supporters are about it is astounding, exciting and inspiring.

Tennis fumbled away the declining Davis Cup by changing the format for the worse. Laver Cup tried to be Ryder Cup but it has failed miserably. So what to do?

It may be time for tennis to show some originality and creativity by forming a whole new special event.

A Continent’s Cup might be an interesting competition – Europe, Asia, Eastern Europe, South America, North America, Australia would be the teams.

Or how about an over 25 versus under 25 kind of Next Gen vs Old Gen would be a nice change of pace.

World Team Tennis ended two years ago after decades of existence. Hopman Cup folded a few years ago but revived in a new location and schedule date but it’s not the same. Fed Cup and the new Davis Cup are ok but they don’t move the needle like Ryder Cup.

Tennis is the more exciting, dramatic sport than golf. But golf has somehow managed to produce the ultimate team competition, the Ryder Cup, which tennis needs to match or exceed.

Ok here is an outside the box idea. The holy grail cup. You have the eastern euro’s as the orthodox, there would be a catholic group, a protestant/ evangelical group and then a humanist/atheist group. It could be really interesting to see and totally original. Lots of possibilities to make it even more intense.

Wow great idea Matt, and it would attract incredible buzz hype and media discussion. But like Serena vs McEnroe, Battle of the sexes 4, the establishment will NEVER do it. Other ideas: Lefties vs Righties )

Under six footers vs over six footers )
