Tennis “Friend” Matthew Perry Dies

Famous actor Matthew Perry was a ranked junior tennis player in Canada and also a friend of former WTA no. 1 Jennifer Capriati. Denise Capriati, the mother of Jennifer, shared some of her memories of Perry, who passed away yesterday at age 54 at his home in Los Angeles, CA.

“Heartbreaking news. Matthew Perry died today,” wrote Denise Capriati on her Facebook page. “Horrible accident. He was a wonderful friend to me and my daughter and the world. I have so many great memories of our times together. Matthew loved tennis and came to all of the tournaments. He would make everyone laugh in the player’s lounge. He couldn’t help himself from dribbling ice from his mouth. Sitting on the floor and rolling tennis balls back and forth to Jen in the floor in the lounge. He loved playing tennis with her father, he was a man of quirks and character and laughter, kindness, love and sensitivity. I loved him dearly and will miss him and his laughter and all the great support and help he gave to others who were suffering! He always picked up the phone when I asked for help.”

“You should have seen him at the French Open! Oh my god. He went shopping with us to Versace and they couldn’t sell him a tie. He said it was too expensive. The paparazzi had a field day with that one! They followed us to every shop while Jen and I tried on clothes for his opinion. He would say, ‘I wouldn’t spend that kind on money on that stuff.’ We were hoping he would tell the salesperson to wrap it up and give him the bill! Haha!”

“My heart is so sad. Jen and I went everyday to the set of Friends. We played goofy word games in his dressing room with Jennifer Aniston and the rest of the cast. We all spoke pig Latin. It was hilarious…then he would run outside and hit tennis balls against the wall until the next take…. long ten hour days… so much fun.”

Matthew Perry portrayed Chandler Bing on the NBC television show “Friends” from 1994-2004 and earned a Screen Actors Guild Award for the role. In 2002, the show was so popular, each cast member was earning $1m per episode. Perry also starred in films Fools Rush In, Almost Heroes, The Whole Nine Yards, The Whole Ten Yards, The Ron Clark Story.
