Qiang Wang Returns

Former WTA no. 12 Qiang Wang of China has returned to pro tennis competition after over a year off and marriage.

Best known for beating Serena Williams at Australian Open 2020, the 32 year old Wang resumed her career in late January in Hua Hin, Thailand but was beaten by Xiyu Wang 61 61.

Not quite ready for the high level of lower level WTA tournaments, Wang trained for two and a half more months and returned again in April in Shenzen and won two rounds before losing in QF to Han Shi 63 67 26.

A two-time WTA singles title winner, Wang played another $25,000 tournament in Shenzen the next week and reached semis where she lost to rising star Lanlana Tararudee of Thailand 26 26.

This week in Wuning $25,000 Wang won five matches and the title, defeating Tararudee.

Wang’s previous tournament before this comeback was in Tokyo in September 2022, a first round loss to Elise Mertens 60 63.

In 2024 Wang’s match record is 9-3. Her ranking now is outside 1000.
