Murray vs. Ferrer SONY Men’s Final (Live Thread)

Murray vs. Ferrer meet again, they hit together last week before their second round matches on the practice court. I remember it was a very hard fought practice session, and very closely competed. These guys know each other’s games as well as their own.

Murray won their last meeting on grass at Wimbledon, Ferrer won the match before that on clay at Roland Garros.

It’s going to be a battle…

I’ll share with you my observations from here in the stadium…

Ferrer holds and breaks Murray to jump out to a 2-0 lead. A backhand by Ferrer very deep or even off the line provokes Murray to net a backhand for the decisive point. 2-0 David. Ferrer must be a nightmare to play, he’s like a human pitbull who just drank five coffees, and he never misses.

“he’s like a human pitbull who just drank five coffees, and he never misses.” Perfect description.

Ferrer up 5-0 on Andy. Wow.

Murray is like an eagle flying in the air waiting and watching for a prey to pounce. Murray has eagle eyes.

Murray seems to be in the driver seat now but he has to be careful not to get too cute with his shot selection against Ferrer.

They’re showing a lot of footage in between sets. Murray never seems to say please or thank-you when demanding water or ice.

  • Steve · March 31, 2013 at 1:27 pm

    …and in between points.

Isn’t it absurd for this umpire or any umpire to constantly say during a good compelling match, “Please be quiet.” I mean, it’s a sporting event, it’s not the friggin’ opera. As long as people aren’t walking around during play, I feel they should be able to be as loud as they want. This is not stuffy golf.

Murray is going for the Academy Award just like in the old days. Limping around and then suddenly ripping winners.

This is women’s tennis. The third set goes 7 games before Ferrer holds serve. They’ve played nearly three sets and they have a total of about 25 winners. Look, I can watch this, but it’s far from my favorite tennis. Since I’ve been watching, starting in the third set, only Murray has approached the net, once!

Make the courts faster or the balls because this is like watching clay court tennis on hard courts.

…Murray did say thank-you to the water kid when up a break…

–it’s a fitness battle they just happen to be holding racquets 🙂

I only caught the end, but what a travesty that they cut out right before the start of the tiebreak.

Just an incredible war. Ferrer changed the timing of his grunts again today and it was uncanny how many times it made Andy miss. Even my colleague Felicia next to me noticed it and how surprisingly effective it was. Epic battle. Grueling tennis. Looked like Ferrer was crying at his chair after. Thought Dave came up passive on the key points in the 6-5 game, he did not grunt and was not aggressive. It cost him, maybe he needed to be more aggressive then but maybe he’s not comfortable being ultra aggressive in the clutch moments at the end. Dan, the crowdd was constantly yelling things and it was disturbing the players, Ferrer missed a forehand inside out wide as the clown yelled right before he struck the ball. It warranted the chair ump to issued the warnings. Great match, great final weekend.

Never saw Ferrer tired or cramp before. Ferrer challenged the call on MP but it caught line. Amazing match. Everyone here loved it. Two epic finals. High quality tennis. SONY Open, the fifth slam.

Scoop, any sense of which player had more support from the crowd in terms of numbers???

  • Scoop Malinowski · March 31, 2013 at 11:34 pm

Steve I would say 60-40 for Ferrer, or 70-30, Serena vs. Maria was pretty close.

Ah. The telecast stream showed some people holding RF(Federer) banners in the crowd which was interesting.

  • Scoop Malinowski · April 1, 2013 at 9:19 am

Didn’t notice those Steve but did see an enormous amount of people sporting RF caps and gear during the whole two weeks. A good amount of Rafa caps too.
