Miami Open Notebook Page 1

Miomir Kecmanovic gets minimal media attention or coverage but he looked like a juggernaut yesterday routing Sebastian Korda. The Serbian is still coached by David Nalbandian since early 2021.

Media center press box not even half full yet and many of the big name reporters are absent.

Was told an anecdote from US Open last year how Reilly Opelka was asked by a reporter about which players he loved to watch when younger. The American answered with an unexpected name… David Ferrer. Another reporter present in the small interview room laughed. Opelka shot back a comment questioning the laugher, What? I can’t like David Ferrer? I can only like to watch tall guys like Isner? It’s no wonder Opelka he as called the tennis media “the worst” and “awful.”

Concession prices are not drawing rave reviews. $17 for a slice of pizza and $15 for a can of beer.

A nice addition to the overall Miami Open experience is the ski lift like ride over the grounds, so riders can enjoy an aerial view of the venue.

The Bud Collins media tennis tournament is scheduled for Saturday morning at 9 am.

Received a copy of the 2022 ATP media guide which features three photos of Novak Djokovic on the front cover and three of Nikoka Mektic and Mate Pavic on the back cover. The WTA media guide is only online, there is no hard copy.

Interesting to see former doubles grand slam champ Nenad Zjimonic watching Alcaraz vs Cilic from the photo pit.

Adjacent to the Hard Rock Stadium is a giant grandstand currently under construction for the inaugural Formula 1 race which will be staged in May. Two years ago the next big event after the tennis was a Rolling Stones concert.

I sat next to Brooksby coach Joey Gilbert during the win vs Agut. Lots of eye contact from Jenson, all positive. Brooksby would give these glares like a Terminator, as if to draw some extra inspiration from the coach who created him. The two have a special bond like Kuerten and Passos and Youhzny and Sobkin, partnerships that lasted from childhood until the last ATP match. Gilbert regripped Brooksby’s Wilson racquets during changeovers.

I envy you Scoop. Brooksby the escape artist got down 0-4 in 3rd just to win 6 straight & steal it from the spaniard. Best finish ever.

Yes it was another jaw dropping effort by Brooksby who is well on his way to the mountain top.
