First Pro Match: I remember my first pro match, not the last. Dianne Fromholtz 1979 US Open. After I won 21 & under nationals while still thirteen, USTA gave me a wildcard into US Open qualies. They were supposed to give the winner wildcard into main draw. They wanted to give me nothing as I was “too young.” I proved them wrong by winning the three rounds of qualifying starting on my fourteenth birthday. Lost to Fromholtz in main draw on the beloved Grandstand Court. The next day I was on the front page of The New York Times with Bjorn Borg, both hitting forehands.
