Hsieh Wang Team Into US Open Doubles Semi

In the shadows of the tennis mastery of Novak, Carlos, Shelton, Sabalenka and Coco, another player is having a fantastic fortnight in Flushing Meadows.

37 year old Su-Wei Hsieh and her partner Xinyu Wang, this year’s Roland Garros women’s doubles winners, have won four matches in three sets and have reached the semifinals of US Open.

Today Hsieh and Wang defeated Gauff and Pegula 76 36 64 in the quarterfinals on Louis Armstrong Stadium, clinched on a Hsieh poach volley winner down the middle off a Gauff attempted backhand crosscourt shot.

At this year’s Open, the Asian team defeated Linda Fruhvirtova and Camilla Osorio 62 in the third set in the first round, then Mattek-Sands and Potapova 75 in the third in the second round. In the third round they topped Avanesyan and Rakhimova 62 in the third.

Hsieh has been sensational this year in doubles, she didn’t play in Australia, then won Roland Garros with Wang and then won Wimbledon with Barbora Strycova. Hsieh is two matches away from winning her third Grand Slam title this year and the best year of her career.

Hsieh is currently ranked 9 in doubles and 692 in singles. She is seeking her first US Open title.

Hsieh won Wimbledon doubles in 2013 and Roland Garros doubles in 2014. She added two more Wimbledon crowns in 2019 and 2021 in doubles. Hsieh did not compete in pro tennis in 2022.

Hsieh and Wang, the no. 8 seeds in New York will face 16 seeds Gaby Dabrowski and Erin Routliffe in the semifinals. Top seeds Krejcikova and Siniakova were upset in the first round.

The other women’s doubles semifinal pits unseeded Luisa Stefani and Jennifer Brady vs 12 seeds Vera Zvonareva and Laura Siegemund.
