Has Djokovic’s Aura Of Invincibility Ended?

By Scoop Malinowski

Going into Wimbledon this summer Novak Djokovic was the dominant force in the ATP, having won the two Grand Slams this year at Roland Garros and Australian Open and also at Wimbledon 2022 (he wasn’t allowed to play US Open 2022).

Djokovic lost a virtual dead heat photo finish with Carlos Alcaraz 64 in the fifth set of the Wimbledon final last week. In the marathon epic battle, Alcaraz won 168 points, just one more than Djokovic’s 167 points won.

The Djokovic vs Alcaraz is ultra close. Djokovic won a thriller at Roland Garros semis this year and Carlos won the first meeting last year on clay, a three set duel. So it’s 2-1 for Carlos.

Before the Wimbledon final Djokovic stated that it’s possible that he was playing the very best tennis of his career this year, as evidenced by the two Grand Slams and also his streak of winning fourteen consecutive Grand Slam tiebreaks.

But then he was outplayed narrowly by Alcaraz in the final.

Even Nostradamus could not predict which way the rivalry will go. It’s possible Djokovic could avenge Carlos at US Open. But it’s also possible that the 20 year old has solved the mental and physical puzzles of combating Djokovic. And the Wimbledon final performance and tactics executed could be kryptonite for the 36 year old.

Alcaraz will only get better. He hasn’t come close to reaching his prime, which could happen at age 25 or 30 or maybe even well beyond 30. It’s scary how much better the already extraordinary Spaniard can continue to evolve and grow as a player and champion.

Djokovic’s upside is unknown. It may even be over. But then again, there never has been a champion like Djokovic, who overcame both Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer and exceeded almost all of their impossible records and achievements. Djokovic is still highly motivated to win more Grand Slams than just the 23 he owns now. He also is driven by the challenge to conquer Alcaraz, who he praised after the Wimbledon final loss to be a more complete player than Federer and Nadal.

Those remarkable words of high praise indicate that Carlos Alcaraz is the ultimate challenge of Djokovic’s career. And now Djokovic will dedicate all of his energies and powers to try to prove that his tennis invincibility did not end last week on center court at Wimbledon.

And you have to think it’s more than possible that Djokovic will rise to the occasion and summon another spectacular surge of greatness and tennis magic at the US Open. What we all are curiously wondering is, will it be enough though?

Or will Djokovic fall short to Carlos again – like the 25 year old Bjorn Borg did against John McEnroe at the 1981 US Open final where he lost 64 26 46 36. Of course, we all remember what happened to Borg… he never played another Grand Slam tournament. Borg won two Grand Slams in 1980 at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Borg won 1981 Roland Garros vs Ivan Lendl in five sets, and was runner up at 1981 Wimbledon (also to McEnroe) and 1981 US Open.

Surely Djokovic has already begun preparing, studying and working on what he needs to do to slay the dragon of Alcaraz on the hard courts of New York. And their inevitable showdown will be for stakes much more important than just one tournament result.

Hey, it’s nothing that a quick listen to Pat Benatar’s “Invincible” won’t cure. 😁

Sam I forgot that 80s super hit classic. Thanks for reminding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A4xBp2rizQ

I don’t see Djokovic losing to anyone but Alcaraz, whereas I can see others knocking the young latter out. Zverev, Medvedev, maybe a short handful of others can knock out Carlito on a hard court. I think Djokovic ends up with 27. Just a hunch. He has no fitness issues, no injury issues. I can see him winning a few more as he’s 37, 38. It would be a great time to bet on Djokovic, he will likely be the underdog against Alcaraz at the USO IMO. That fifth set was a coin flip.

But like u alluded above, Djoker did all of the above impeded constantly by Fedal. It’s conjecture but yeah, Alcaraz might end up being the future GOAT especially since his future paths will be unimpeded by the 3 current GOATs.

(which has to be a huge asterisk on future GOAT-ness)
    🙂

No problem, Scoop. I’ve heard that Pat still sounds good at 70, even though she hasn’t released an album in like 20 years. 😏

I think the biggest question is: How many more will he be allowed to win. 🧐

    Ha ha

Emma’s ‘aura of invincibility’ will quickly end in a car crash if she carries on like this:

‘Things are clearly hotting up for Emma Raducanu and Carlo Agostinelli – as she fans herself with a ‘do not disturb’ hat after joining him on a Greek break.
The British tennis star, 20, has been cruising the Aegean with no expense spared, as snaps posted on social media prove.
Carlo’s father is Italian-US billionaire Robert Agostinelli and also in tow is Carlo’s sister, ex-Made in Chelsea star Heloise Agostinelli.
Though Emma and the ex-Harrow head boy, 23, are yet to acknowledge their relationship, they have already been snapped together in Mexico.’

Mind you, it’s no life for a hunk, following your floozie around the world while you do nothing at all except fight with her coach and pose for the tabloids. BTW Emma is 21 I believe.

Oh, and this player did it the right way: Kvitova got married
a day or so ago in Czechia. She got the titles first.

Still remember before Wimbledon Paul McNamee said they were going to try to stop Novak from winning Wimbledon “at all costs.” He was right.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 23, 2023 at 8:04 am

Emma Raducanu will give it every ounce of blood guts and soul she has to win another grand slam but the other wta players will never let it happen again. Let her enjoy the lifestyle she earned.

  • catherine · July 23, 2023 at 11:06 am

Emma won’t have the lifestyle much longer if she prioritises pix in scummy tabloids with getting out there and working as hard as she can on her game.

I’m not blaming her at all for enjoying life – just recalling the names of players, mostly female, who waved goodbye to their promise long before their time was up.

Tursunov said Emma was ‘obsessed’ with tennis. Let’s see how that plays out when Mr Millionaire thinks differently.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 23, 2023 at 11:14 am

Like to see Emma hire a coach like Becker, Agassi or Capriati or Seles or even Maria. Someone who has been a media target and has been through the media ringer. How to handle living in the fish bowl of such intense media scrutiny is maybe what the kid needs most of all, she knows how to hit a ball

  • catherine · July 24, 2023 at 11:56 am

I found this amusing and instructive from IMG’s Max Eisenbud:

‘Eisenbud described his first meeting with Li Na. He said he was nervous, and had worked hard on his pitch. But before he gave it, Li Na said that he had made Sharapova rich and she would sign with him. He could hardly believe his ears. He also said that he thought Emma Raducanu and her father would continue to change coaches often because that was the way they had always worked.’

The comment re Emma’s coaching was made by a couple of people in the know just after she won the USO but was ignored by fans and assorted experts who thought they knew better. Max obviously observed and listened.

  • Cyndy · July 24, 2023 at 12:42 pm

Well ., I dont think so Scoop Malinowski, he will definitely win a few more. Was watching The Hungarian F1 Grand Prix yesterday and was abso shocked by what I heard on the tv… there was this journalist/reporter guy who walked up to Carlos Sainz and started his sentence with “So Carlitos……” I was truly shocked and Sainz was equally flabbergasted as he said “ I’m sorry, what did you say?”. It felt like Sainz wasn’t at all amused… me too.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 24, 2023 at 12:46 pm

Catherine, Raducanu is a very unique coaching situation. Very high profile, just coming off winning a Grand Slam, some coaches would PAY Raducanu to appear as her coach as it’s tremendous exposure for them. Some coaches want the long term contract with their long term plans. She knows how to play and win Grand Slams. But the problem for her is most of the wta players resent her and her fame, fortune, media attention, sponsor millions, etc. They all have extra incentive and motivation to beat her. No coach on the planet can neutralize that disadvantage. Raducanu’s future is unpredictable, her results are unpredictable, she may never reach another WTA semi. So it’s understandable why Raducanu will not lock in long term guaranteed contract to any coach. At this point, I think the odds are against her winning a second major or reaching top ten.

  • catherine · July 24, 2023 at 1:31 pm

Depends on what kind of shape she’s in when she comes back. You could say the same about Osaka perhaps – I have a feeling the landscape of the WTA may be completely changed if some of the younger players we’ve seen this year continue to improve. Raducanu’s 2021 exploits will have receded into the past.

Emma has a butterfly mind = doesn’t settle in one place for long. MacEnroe was a bit like that.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 24, 2023 at 1:31 pm

Cyndy, I also believe Djokovic is far from finished and he will win more Grand Slams. But if he loses to Carlos at US Open his chances diminish sharply IMO. I don’t understand your F1 anecdote, who is Carlos Sainz? Hopefully at US Open there will not be any underhanded agendas against Novak, such as that time violation call by Murphy at 45 in the second set TB. I really believe that disconcerted Novak and caused him to miss those backhands on the following points. Critical errors.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 24, 2023 at 2:15 pm

Catherine, Raducanu trains like a beast, she’s super fit always and always will be. Great work ethic and body genetics, diet, and all that. Her issue is dealing with the “lonely at the top” factor and accepting she has no friends in tennis. And every opponents treats her like the biggest match of their life and for her every match is just another match, another opponent. She has to find a way to get herself fired up and somehow generate more intensity than her opponents generate for her. It’s a fascinating story and dynamic. She should hire Maria as her consultant or part time coach. Maria knows all about being all alone in tennis and not having any wta friends. Osaka situation is totally different. She sunk herself with the political activism that actually turned her from beloved adored global hero to someone most tennis fans now dislike. I have had several fans tell me flat out, “I used to love her, now I can’t stand her.” Not sure how Osaka can fix that mess. For a sensitive soul like herself, it may not be possible. Deep down she knows she went from being loved to the opposite, due to her own actions. I can’t think of another athlete who ruined their career and image by going so political like that.

Yes, I think he was, Scoop. Well, at least they nearly failed.

So . . . what tricks do you have think they have up their sleeve leading up to the U.S. Open? 🪄

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 24, 2023 at 2:38 pm

Sam, Tough draw, day matches in the extreme heat, negative media articles, umpire tricks.

  • Cyndy · July 25, 2023 at 3:01 am

Scoop Malinowski- Carlos Sainz is a Spanish F1 motor racing driver and it definitely looked like he didn’t like being called Carlitos!
It’s a good thing that Djokovic is not playing in Canada specially after last year when they could have let him and they didn’t. Yes hopefully no underhand agendas against Djokovic at the USOpen, so let’s see, apart from watching the umpires now.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 25, 2023 at 8:56 am

Yes Canada Open backstabbed Novak last year, they don’t deserve any favors from him. I didn’t know Carlitos is only a special name for Alcaraz, but not sure why Sainz would be so offended by being called it.

  • Sam · July 25, 2023 at 2:40 pm

Sam, Tough draw, day matches in the extreme heat, negative media articles, umpire tricks.

Scoop, isn’t the U.S. Open the place where the draw is “revealed,” not performed? Yeah, no reason to ever be suspicious about THAT kind of draw. 😹

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 25, 2023 at 3:42 pm

Sam, right and they use to perform it in a ceremony, one year it was at United Nations.

  • catherine · July 26, 2023 at 6:41 am

Scoop -nóne óf the chat abóut Raducanu, Osaka etc is going to matter much shortly.

Mirra Andreeva will be World No 1.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 26, 2023 at 8:31 am

So you think they will let a Russian be no. 1 Catherine? That won’t look to good to the sponsors and investors.

  • catherine · July 26, 2023 at 11:01 am

Not getting into politics Scoop. Sponsors and investors can be found on both sides.

However, expect to see Andreeva transformed into a Kazakh or somesuch and IMG and PM will race to the finish line.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 26, 2023 at 5:46 pm

Yes, Andreeva can maximize her income by disguising her Russianness. Because equality in tennis is a total myth sham.

  • catherine · July 27, 2023 at 6:27 am

‘Equality’ in a competive activity is meaningless. Imagine if everyone was at the same level.

Anyway Andreeva lost her last match so she’d better go back to school.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 27, 2023 at 8:00 am

Catherine, in boxing Tyson Fury revealed there is a secret scheme to blackball Eastern Europeans from taking over boxing. I wonder if it also exists in tennis? http://ringobserver.com/tyson-fury-explains-secret-racist-scheme-to-blackball-eastern-europeans/

  • catherine · July 28, 2023 at 9:26 am

Well Scoop, it’s not very secret if it’s coming out of Tyson Fury’s mouth, neither is it likely to make much sense.

BTW – I’ve just seen a new young girl playing for Germany who might be getting some good results soon. She’s Nigerian.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 28, 2023 at 10:39 am

Catherine, how would you describe the general perception of tyson fury by the British public and yourself? Also, the German girl I mentioned earlier this week after seeing her highlights, astoundingly impressive, she’s a lefty, perfect technique and already ranked 209. I can’t remember being so impressed by a young player just from a first time seeing a 2 min highlights video. Noha is her name, last name escapes me now. But definitely a standout talent, game, poise, cool, the whole nine yards.

  • catherine · July 28, 2023 at 2:10 pm

The African/German girl is Noha Akugue. Like you I was impressed by the highlights I saw. I imagine DTB officials are crossing their fingers. There are now around half a dozen promising girls active at the moment and it’ll be interesting to see how they develop over the next few years.

Re Tyson Fury – for details, there’s a lot on Wikipedia, mostly accurate as far as personal info etc. I think he divides fans and the general public. He’s of Irish Traveller (Gypsy) heritage which places him as an outsider when ‘Britishness’ is concerned. As you probably know he’s had myriad mental and physical problems. He’s the sort who veers betwen being a ‘lovable rogue’ and uncontrollably nuts. But has a lot of loyal and faithful followers. Fair amount of insults involved sometimes (when he loses) because of the English attitude to Gypsy/Traveller culture.

But overall Fury’s given sports journalists a lot to write about, and not just the boxing press.

He lives in Lancashire and supports Man Utd (who else).

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 28, 2023 at 4:47 pm

Catherine, Yes I see success coming for Akugue, she has that X factor or something special, my tennis senses told me. Fury has never lost but he’s bee ducking the best, he fake talks like he wanted to fight Joshua and Usyk but he faked out of it in the end both times. He also tried to duck Dillian Whyte but was forced into it and did win by uppercut knockout but he looked ordinary before that punch, too fat, too heavy, plodding, he’s lost his A game, but he can still beat most contenders with his skills, height and reach and talent. I think he knows he’s fading fast because he didn’t take proper care of his body, bad diet, always got fat, and he knows he can lose badly to Joshua and Usyk so he has to pretend to try to fight them, then fake and lie his way out of it. Very talented but not an authentic character.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 29, 2023 at 8:45 am

I see Akugue already has her own web site and has had it for years, so she’s been ready for this breakout for a while. Says her father migrated to Germany from Nigeria during the Steffi boom, Noha says she loves Osaka because she’s black and her poker face on court.

  • catherine · July 29, 2023 at 1:53 pm

Noha got a pasting 6-0 1st set in her match v Rus but recovered in the 2nd. That was Aranxta’s first title I think, in her longish career.

I’m wondering about Noha having a website and possibly her father’s involvement in her career. Also saw her comments about Osaka which I thought strange, bearing in mind Naomi is half Japanese, represents Japan, and her ‘poker face’ is often broadly associated with Japanese personal qualities in several ways. Interesting she didn’t mention Gauff.

I’m assuming Noha is representing Germany although I imagine there could have been pressure on her to become Nigeria’s first pro tennis champion.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 29, 2023 at 5:29 pm

Catherine, had to be nervous in her first final of her first WTA tournament. Still a superb week and debut. Don’t count on Akugue representing Nigeria in Fed Cup or the Olympics. Zero chance Germany lets her slip away, they need her.
