We'll be providing coverage of the 2012 Australian Open via our correspondent Jayita A. Belcourt, who hails from the Gold Coast of Australia. Jayita will do interviews, features and take photos in Melbourne so stay tuned for her reports. I first met Jayita around the grounds at the U.S. Open last year, now you can get to know her by reading her Biofile... Continue to read full article...

Random Tennis Player Biofile: Abel Jimenez

I was running some errands and passed by the three public courts on Anna Maria Island at around noon. And taking up two of the courts were five players garbed in dark blue and orange from the Syracuse University women's team, working hard and fast. It was like watching five Nadals, slugging it out from the baseline, pounding overheads. I did not see one player take a water break or show even a hint of laziness in the ten minutes I was there. Brilliant performance today by Milos Raonic to win his second ATP singles title, in a marathon third set tiebreaker in Chennai against top ten bulldog Janko Tipsarevic. Raonic burst onto the ATP scene one year ago with some spectacularly efficient and mature performances on hard courts, before an awkward slip on the grass at Wimbledon resulted in a serious hip injury, which some tennis observers feared might be the end of his just beginning pro career... Biofile with Alexander Dolgopolov

Status: ATP #15. Has career wins over Clement, Stepanek, Tsonga, Soderling, Gonzalez, Tomic, Seppi, Lu, and Youhzny. Member of Ukraine’s Davis Cup team. Ht: 6-0 Wt: 192 DOB: November 7, 1988 In: Kiev, Ukraine First Tennis Memory: “Probably traveling with (Andrei) Medvedev when my father (Oleksandr) coached him, being on court and having fun. We were friends. I was always there, he was winning some tournaments, I was there. When I took the balls and the racquet I was small, sitting there watching him play. I don’t remember the cities. One tournament, I got lost at the tennis courts. I remember I was surrounded one time. I couldn’t really write – I was just writing my name as a signature, because they know I was always on the court with him. I was really a popular kid then. Because all the players played with me. And I was having some fun.” Continue to read full article...

Early Observations in 2012

It looks like Gael Monfils is ready to become a major factor in the grand slams. He's really belting the backhand, coming into the net more and making the volleys. His serve looks bigger now too. Le Monf, despite a couple brain cramp ill-fated drop shots, played spectacular, winning tennis against Nadal in Doha and looks to have taken his game to a higher level with more emphasis on winning rather than being a showman. He has a new coach who I did not recognize, and The Magician Fabrice Santoro was sitting in his box during the straight set win over Nadal. Continue to read full article...

Biofile with Victor Hanescu

Big Vic is a steady player who has been around the ATP Tour since 2000 but does not get a lot of media publicity or court time on the big courts. Some might call Hanescu a "journeyman" but he's had a solid pro career, with some good wins, titles in singles and doubles, and consistent results over the years, maintaining, for the most part, an ATP ranking in the top 30-75 range with a career 166-185 career won-loss ledger (not to mention almost $3 million in career prize money). Because less popular players sometimes provide the best interview subjects, I decided to interview the low-key Romanian, who opened the 2012 season with a win over Sam Querrey...
