It’s Wonderful To See Raonic Has Made A Full Recovery

Brilliant performance today by Milos Raonic to win his second ATP singles title, in a marathon third set tiebreaker in Chennai against top ten bulldog Janko Tipsarevic.

Raonic burst onto the ATP scene one year ago with some spectacularly efficient and mature performances on hard courts, before an awkward slip on the grass at Wimbledon resulted in a serious hip injury, which some tennis observers feared might be the end of his just beginning pro career. The Canadian returned to the Tour late last year but did not have any notable victories.

But by upsetting Tipsarevic in the final in Chennai, Raonic has certainly shown that he is back, and he is going to be dangerous for anybody in the draw in Melbourne. Raonic has one of the most lethal serves in the business, when it’s ON, top players like Tipsarevic and Verdasco and Roddick can barely touch it.

Watching and listening to Raonic accept the champion’s trophy, it’s clear this young player has all the attributes of a champion and in the near future, if he can stay healthy, he will be competing for major titles and perhaps the #1 ranking.

Oh yes, Scoop. The kid has some serious weapons. He was the one who impressed me most among the young guns who made headlines last year.

Yes, it’s good to see him back in the circuit, but I felt his game was slightly better last year when he beat Mardy and Verdasco (if I remember right). That fall in Wimbledon was terrible because I was waiting for his match against Nadal in the next round. Didn’t happen.

Raonic could improve his return game and get into rallies a bit more. It seems like he is a bit too impatient. Way too many unforced errors.

His serve is the best in the business today and he plays the critical points really well unlike many others. Raonic has all the weapons to win slams or reach #1 if he stays healthy.

My family in Chennai was there on court watching the match from the best spot. Amritraj brothers were commentating. Great event!

Pretty cool, that Raonic won and Gans’ family was at the event watching. Didn’t see any of it as Tennis Channel is dormant in New York these days, at least for me a Verizon carrier. Scoop, you’re loving it down there in Florida, able to watch your Tennis Channel.

Raonic could buck the trend of players who suffered hip injuries never making it back. Of course, he suffered his when he was still only 20. I’d like to see him make a push to the top as a new gun who plays more aggressively and may serve and volley once or twice is need amongst the Big 5, if you count Delpo.

    Scoooop,

Not a good showing for your man, Dolgo, in the finals against Mr. Murray. Had to apologize to the fans, something about being hurt all week. Dolgo’s got to step up.

And such a great final Gans! Match of the year (so far). Raonic is the real deal, so nice to see he is back at full strength. Vijay Armritraj is the best most enthusiastic TV commentator in the business, love listening to him. That looks like a fantastic event, the people there love tennis, great event to start the year.

I do not think Raonic has made a full recovery. Certainly can not say this after yesterday’s win. Winning five best of 3 set matches versus 7 best of 5 argument. He had a surgical hip injury, which I believe involved a displaced tendon. Much like Safin displaced tendon on his knee. These are not injuries that allow continuous training opportunities.

Agree with Tom here. This is a promising start, but time will tell how he holds up.
