Check This Out: The Magic Of Djokovic

Awesome little video of the king of tennis, shot in Alpine, NJ with his pal Dusan Vemic. This video was apparently filmed after the unforgettable win over Roger in the US Open semis and before the final vs. Nadal….

What strikes me about this short video is how skillful both players are with their racquets, especially on the close-to-the-net touch shots. And the extreme reaction of the victor after achieving the hard-fought triumph which at first seemed just to be a light playful game.

interesting, I’ve never seen that drill. Dubious about hitting ball down on court that way if it helps your racket skills, but the workout is extraordinary. Also, interesting, too, Vemic a Serb. I wonder if Djokovic ever practices with a Croat?

Vemic used to be in amazing shape and he still looks very fit at 35. I remember him playing Vince in the quarters of Newport in 2005, the year Vince served for the tournament in the finals against Rusedski and lost. And Vemic gave Vince fits even though he beat him in straights.

It was a mesmerizing drill to see, very different from regular tennis but the versatility it takes to be able to feel the ball for these shots surely helps broaden the hands of the player for regular tennis. I saw Ellis Ferreira showing Tamaryn Hendler a similar drill of hitting overheads into the wall off a bounce. The point seems to be to get the player to be able to feel like their racquet is a magic wand and they can do anything with it, absolutely anything. Djokovic looks like he can do anything with his racquet. I think the Serbians are a tight and loyal unit and they all stick together which is good to see. Djokovic is friendly with other players like Fish and Verdasco but when it comes to his team, it’s primarily mostly Serbians and Marian Vajda.

Thanks for the video, Scoop. Played and watched with my kid. Both of them have great hands at the net.

You’re welcome Gans, glad you liked it, what did your son think? I think it’s good practice to play weird games like that to develop touch and feel. Wonder what a top notch coach thinks about playing games like in this video.

Yeah, we play some weird games like that. I couldn’t tell if my kid was impressed or learnt anything, but I saw him pay 100% attention.

Scoop, BTW, I was hoping to write and send yu the link to Gary’s profile, but started to read some books on quantum physics and got totally sucked into a “blackhole”- couldn’t get out of it.

Hope sometime soon I will complete the ‘project’. : )
