US Open 2022 Quotebook

Amid all the cliches and PR player quotes, here are some of the best and most revealing quips from the US Open so far…

Stan Wawrinka: ā€œI know that I’m closer to the end. That’s for sure. It’s a reality. I will never be able to play as well as I did in my career because I’m getting older, but I believe that I still have some good and big results in me and that’s why I keep gonna fight a little bit.ā€

Taylor Fritz: “Yeah it sucks. Been playing really well. Had really high hopes. I feel like an idiot for thinking that I could win this thing, win the US Open. I can’t go out and play a match like that (loss to Brandon Holt). It sucks. I feel awful. It definitely makes it a lot tougher that we know each other so well, practice with each other a lot. It’s a big neutralizer for sure. I probably would have preferred (to play) one of the other qualifers, even though he was probably the lowest ranked one.”

Emma Raducanu: “Really sad to leave here. It’s probably my favorite tournament. But also, in a way, I’m happy because it’s a clean slate. I’m going to drop down the rankings (to 80). Climb my way back up. In a way, the target will be off my back slightly.”

Rafael Nadal: “It’s about being humble enough to accept the process and take positive things. It’s a moment to survive and stay positive, stay with the right attitude, enjoying the fact I’m here.”

Venus Williams: “I just love being here. Love playing here. The excitement of getting here. And the lead up is all just… it never gets old. It’s so sweet.”

Serena Williams: “I’m just Serena, you know? Honestly after the second set (vs Kontaveit) I thought Oh my goodness, I’ve got to give my best effort because this could be it. I was just really excited.”

Anett Kontaveil: “I definitely had no shame losing to Serena, it was very difficult with the crowd.” (Kontaveit then ended her press conference and departed in tears.)

Felix Auger Aliassime: “Disappointed to see the end of the road in New York this year (after 64 64 64 loss to Jack Draper) but staying positive because I know the best is yet to come. See you all next year.”

Paul McNamee: “Hey @JimmyConnors are you really turning 70 today? When I was playing you were the best competitor out there, and Iā€™m not sure anyone has ever done it better. Happy Birthday Jimbo from the Aussies who admired you.”

Matteo Berrettini on Djokovic’s being banned: “I am sorry for him, but there is rules. It would not be fair to exempt someone just because he is famous. It’s about democracy.”
