The Bublik vs Busta Rivalry

You may not consider it appropriate to call the four match series of Alexander Bublik vs Pablo Carreno Busta a rivalry because one player has won every match.

But all four clashes have all been determined by the absolute slimmest of margins.

The 31 year old Spaniard has beaten Bublik all four times, including yesterday at US Open 46 64 63 76.

The other three matches were even closer.

Their first meeting on indoor hard in Moscow in 2016, Pablo won 64 26 76.

Second match was the Chengdu final in 2019, Pablo won again 67 64 76.

Third meeting was Monte Carlo this year (R32), Pablo won 46 76 43 ret.

So it has been four incredibly redundant tight photo finish matches with the same guy prevailing each time. I find this to be a very rare set of results between two baseline-oriented players. Typically, one has an off day and loses by a bad score. But all four duels were all basically exactly the same.

The 25 year old Russian, ranked 47 in the world, will have to wait for his next chance to finally solve the Pablo puzzle.
