Early Obervations So Far 2017

fedkarlrJust a monumental win by Alexander Zverev over Roger Federer in Hopman Cup 76 67 76. To take down an icon like Federer in his “house” is a feat that only a very special player can do, and Zverev has shown us again that he is extraordinary and has obviously learned a valuable lesson after blowing the match point against Rafael Nadal in Indian Wells a year ago. It is not outside the realm of possibility that Zverev can win a major this year.
Serena Williams three set loss to Brengle is another sign that last year could have been her last hurrah. I saw Brengle training in Bradenton last month with Heather Watson and she is now in the equation about which WTA players can have a breakout year in 2017.
Just wondering where are Ernests Gulbis and Taylor Fritz? Both players have yet to emerge this year.
37 year old Radek Stepanek is into the R16 of Doba after beating Baghdatis and a Belgian wildcard I have never heard of before…Jared Donaldson could break into the top 100 for the first time after qualifying and reaching the second round of Brisbane where the 20 year old American lost in three tough sets to Kei Nishikori who is now wearing Nike shoes with his Uniqlo attire (Donaldson is no longer coached by Taylor Dent after three years together).”
I saw an interview with Pete Sampras who said he’s not interesting in coaching any players right now because he didn’t want to travel and his “heart wouldn’t be into it” but Pete also added that he wouldn’t rule out coaching in the future. (Federer Art by Karl Rosenstock)

Interesting verbal exchange at the coin toss at the net with Roger and Zverev and the ump and a kid wearing an RF hat – Zverev asked the kid if it was nervewracking for the boy to be so close to Roger – kind of an awkward moment for Roger who didn’t say anything – the previous day they had a little girl RF fan at the coin toss and she was crying being there so close to RF –

You think Sampras will coach fritz at some point?

  • Hartt · January 4, 2017 at 4:01 pm

The Federer vs. S. Zverev match was so entertaining. One of the very rare times that I was rooting for Fed’s opponent, so was happy with the outcome. I have Sascha in the year-end top 10 but for him to win a Slam this year, so early in his career, would be amazing. Don’t think he will be quite there yet but expect multiple Slams during his career. I feel like a broken record about this, but in addition to his terrific talent he has the “head and heart” to be a champion.

Tommy Paul lost in first round of the LA futures today to Colin Altamirano a UVA player, this must be a real come down.

  • Andrew Miller · January 4, 2017 at 7:00 pm

Tommy Paul should hire iconoclast Spadea. The guy has crazy talent and Spadea could connect. Or Mayotte. But likely hard to hire folks given not earning big bucks. Recommend he play dubs and make it count to get in extra real world practice against quality opponents and get strategic sense. Altamarimo is good.

Answer is YES Sampras should pair up with a US player. I’d think he won’t join anyone until that player is a clear heir apparent to us throne and he’d likely join someone with crazy athleticism, complete game. That would be Fritz givem California connection.

Lets face it, Sampras sees Becker Lendl Edberg out there and would like nothing better at this point than to beat them and all top players with a US player willing to catapult himself there. He would love to play Lendl by proxy!!!

  • Jg · January 4, 2017 at 7:28 pm

    S. Zverez went up in my book after watching a few games of the mixed dubs Germany v Swiss, players were having a lot of fun, Zverez appears to have a good sense of humor, not mechanical at all. Also, I was looking at the LA futures scores because Clay Thompson is playing and I heard a podcast with him and I suggest everyone listens to it, it’s on Tennis Files, the guy seems really smart, supplements his tennis by writing, was a poetry major and I think writes for video game companies, has great things to say about tennis, and makes a really good observation on his former teammate Mackenzie McDonald, he looks sad on court, has to liven it up a bit. It seems like he is looking into some type of sponsorship deals for challenger/futures players, says going to roll out soon.

Doubles news: Last season 3 ATP players finished in the top 30 in both singles and doubles – Sock, Carreno Busta and Feli Lopez. Lopez was especially successful in doubles, winning RG with Marc Lopez and finishing the season ranked No. 11. Feli is now 35, will he start to concentrate more on doubles?

  • Andrew Miller · January 5, 2017 at 9:10 am

I put zero stock in exhibitions. But it would be fitting for Alex Zverev and his brother Mischa Zverev to play the roles of spoiler in any tournament slam or not if they find themselves up against higher ranked players.
IF THEY MAKE IT THAT FAR!!!!!
Disclaimer: Tennis is a game of Match Ups and like boxing is one of few sports with an any given day dimension. The better player on the day wins. We can’t pencil a player in to win without acknowledging that it’s all guesswork!!!!!!

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 5, 2017 at 9:30 am

JG: Yes I do envision Pete hooking up with Team Fritz – and I think the Fritz family can afford the hefty expense that will be required to hire Pete ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 5, 2017 at 9:31 am

Zverev has it all – there is nothing he lacks right now except maybe the physicality to do it for the two weeks in best of fives –

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 5, 2017 at 9:32 am

I saw Altamirano get shellacked at Sarasota Challenger qualies a few years ago -that’s a bad loss for Paul – It’s incredible what has happened to Paul – His confidence tank has cobwebs –

  • catherine bell · January 5, 2017 at 9:33 am

    Andrew –

Yup – 5 out of the top 10 WTA players are now gone from their respective tournaments – any given day obviously kicked in there ๐Ÿ™‚

Also – lots of stuff about the chaos etc in WTA but it strikes me that the ATP circuit may experience something similar this year. That is, if all these Next Big Things come through. Interesting prospects.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 5, 2017 at 9:37 am

Andrew: Are you insinuating Hopman Cup is just an “exhibition”? It is not! It’s very serious and competitive actually – it is one of the great myths of pro tennis that Hopman Cup is just a silly lil exo – I love this event and have watched it for year and it’s serious and intense with a few scattered light moments -I love Hopman Cup it’s one of my favorite events of the year –

  • Andrew Miller · January 5, 2017 at 1:14 pm

I’m saying putting stock in any result this week is a huge mistake for any tennis analyst!!!!! On par with predicting the winner of a slam before the final draw is out. However serious any player is in Hopman cup is no predictor of Australian Open slam success.

We’ve seen this before. Maybe they do well maybe not! In general I agree that last year’s mega shakeup on the wta may be what’s on the menu this year for the ATP. I’d argue it is but I couldn’t predict who gets the job done. It could be a vet. It may be a breakout player like Pouille. Or it could be Djoko facing a different player every final. Or it could be that Djoko faces Murray every final while the others feel the heat from generation next. Who knows. But its at the doorstep.

  • Dan Markowitz · January 5, 2017 at 1:15 pm

Geez, Almagro, hits the ball so hard, but can’t put away short balls or volleys. Weird coaching advice overheard in Murray-Almagro match, Jaime Delgado telling Murray to grunt more.

It is interesting, when I was down at Canas, I heard all the junior players and even the English coach, grunting like they were Spaniards or clay court players. ‘

Thanks JG for the discovery of the Clay Thompson podcast. I’ve never heard of the guy, but will give listen when I have the chance. Now I’ve heard of Jordan Thompson, the Aussie, but no relation I guess. JG likes the obscure player. Last year at the Qualis, he and his son sat and watched the entire Ryan Shane match, the big Virginian who’s ranked a whopping no. 558.

  • Hartt · January 6, 2017 at 7:23 am

This is one excited Milos fan! ๐Ÿ™‚ He did not play his best today but did bring up his level dramatically in the 3rd set. He has a great chance now to win his 2nd Brisbane title.

  • Doogie · January 6, 2017 at 7:35 am

Edmund played very well this tournament. His style is bit onedimensional but he hits the ball so clean and hard. Can see him finshing this season in Top 20.

Imo Thiem and Pouille will lose some spots 2017 although both are very good players and will have great career.
But they had some luck in 2016 and are ranked higher as they should at the moment.

  • Hartt · January 6, 2017 at 8:35 am

Don’t agree that Thiem is ranked too high. He has had success on all surfaces, is a hard worker and gained invaluable experience last season. It is difficult to predict how Pouille will do but would not be surprised if he at least maintains a top 15 ranking.

  • Doogie · January 6, 2017 at 8:55 am

Thiem has Nr.8 sport – behind him are Federer, Nadal, Berdych, Tsonga and Kyrgios.
Maybe he can pass Cilic but none else imo.

I see him Nr. 11 or 12 but will not playing in London at end of the season.

Yes he is working very hard and he will be a grand slam contender in the future. This year the old ones like Rafa, Fed and Berdy are still in the contest so I expect bit of ranking downfall to 11 or 12 for Domi

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 6, 2017 at 8:57 am

Dan: Grunting works – Sound smart advice by Delgado to Andy – Grunting helps the player with timing breathing and it vents stress – I always recommend players I hit with and coach to grunt because it helps – One coach I know who used to work at NBTA for Nick told me he actually grunts lightly at his ball strike and the opponent’s ball strike across the net -great for your rhythm and timing – Almagro is a Volkl racquet player -Almagro won the first time he ever played Andy years ago but Andy has owned him since –

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 6, 2017 at 8:59 am

I think Thiem and Pouille will both go higher this year – Edmund looks like the real deal as he hits hard and moves nicely – Surely he will have his best year this year –

  • Andrew Miller · January 6, 2017 at 9:07 am

Edmund is decent. Don’t see much slack in his game and played a good us open routines Escobedo,an exhausted Escobedo!
Yes Milos entered AUS open with greatemotiomal base, feeling good confidence tank on full. I put stock in that, he had leveled Federer in that final and his movement though no ballet performance was pretty good for Raonic. He enters again on a crest of confidence. But I still believe any strong scrambler will test him. I’m not sure about big fellas, as Raonic seems to be fine in battlesof serving.

  • Hartt · January 6, 2017 at 10:22 am

Doogie, am not sure all the “old ones” will be able to pass Thiem. I am putting my $ on Fed and maybe Goran can whip Berdy into shape, but would not be surprised if Cilic drops below Thiem. I think Dominator will keep his No. 8 spot.

  • Hartt · January 6, 2017 at 10:50 am

Doubles news: Something of a surprise in Doha. Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin won the title over Vasek Pospisil and Radek Stepanek. The French players have won a few doubles titles over their long careers (3 and 2 respectively). But Pospisil/Stepanek much more accomplished in doubles. Vasek has 6 titles, including Wimby and Radek has 18, including AO and USO!

  • Ryan Balon · January 6, 2017 at 10:51 am

Happy New Year Scoop and Dan,

I’m looking forward to yet another amazing tennis season.

Are either of you attending Indian Wells? I assume Newport is a definite stop….

Scoop couldn’t agree with you more regarding Edmund, Thiem and Pouille – I love the way all three of them play, and foresee them causing problems against the top men.

How about Dimitrov this year, already in the semis in Brisbane hopefully he can continue this success as he is always a pleasure to watch when on.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 6, 2017 at 1:13 pm

Well done by all four Hartt – Pop’s confidence tank is very low for a year and this result will help – Stepanek is still a force in singles and doubles at 38 which is incredible – They did not lose to a pair of stiffs as Chardy is a very good player and Fabrice is also little known but he won Delray Beach dubs last year with Oliver marach vs the Bryans and they saved almost ten match points vs the Bs which is near impossible –

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 6, 2017 at 1:15 pm

Thank you Ryan and same for you – I will be going to IW this year and of course Newport as always – I think we are going to see a lot of rankings movements this year and a lot of new faces playing the big matches in the big events –

  • Dan Markowitz · January 6, 2017 at 2:08 pm

Hey Ryan, Happy New Year’s to you and all our Tennis-Prose.com readers. How about this look-a-like combo, Almagro and Joe Pesci in My Cousin Vinny? Murray and Benedict Cumberbach?

A friend just recommended this tv show on Amazon Prime called, I forget now, but it’s about a pro in the 1980’s, tennis, anybody seen this? I’ll come up with name later. This same friend said a friend of his, big tennis guy, was standing right next to Raonic in an airport recently and was going on about seeing Raonic play in Cincinnati and Raonic completely stiffed the guy.

I can see this with the hairdo and the supermodel girlfriend, Raonic looks like a guy who’s too cool for school. Maybe that’s why he hooked up with Johnny Mac, who’s the original too cool for school guy. I’ll have to ask Johnny Mac about this when I see him tomorrow night in Brooklyn for the Seniors event there with Roddick, Blake and Courier. Geez, Blake and Roddick already despise me now i might have Johnny Mac, who’s usually pretty cool with me, breathing down my neck. Come to think of it, Courier once went nutso on me at the Chris Evert Charity Event of all places.

At least, Gulbis likes me. Any Gulbis sightings yet.

  • Dan Markowitz · January 6, 2017 at 8:41 pm

The show I referred to is “Red Oaks: “A young student works as a tennis pro at the prestigious and exclusive Red Oaks Country Club during the summer between his sophomore and junior years of college (NYU) in the 1980s.”

    Has anyone seen this?

  • Jg · January 6, 2017 at 8:56 pm

Never heard of it but it’s on Amazon, will check out! By the way, clay Thompson lost in round 2 in 3 tie breaker sets.

  • catherine bell · January 7, 2017 at 3:08 am

    Quote of the day:

‘In the future every WTA player will be No 1 for 15 minutes’.

    A. Warhol, tennis fan ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Hartt · January 7, 2017 at 6:02 am

Catherine, that is great. Can I quote you (or Worhal)?

  • Hartt · January 7, 2017 at 6:39 am

Typing error – Warhol, it is very early in the morning here.

Doubles news: Am watching Mattek-Sands/Mirza vs. Makarova/Vesnina in the Brisbane final. Looks like MS/Mirza will take it. They are up a set and a break. Mirza has been the No. 1 WTA doubles player for getting on to 2 years. She is doing well with Mattek-Sands and of course she and Hingis had an incredible run.

  • catherine bell · January 7, 2017 at 7:50 am

    Hartt –

Certainly you can quote me if you cite your source ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 7, 2017 at 8:36 am

Catherine: that is an accurate quote – in actuality if a player goes up a break on Andy in the first set and is winning the match for ten or fifteen minutes then that player is the best player in the world for however long he is up the break ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 7, 2017 at 8:38 am

Wow SaniaSands beatHsieh and Siegemund in the SF – this is the second run for SaniaSands who had good success together years ago – I think Hingis is playing with Lisicki again –

  • Andrew Miller · January 7, 2017 at 8:55 am

What was the Hingis Mirza ruckus about? Ego?
On old guys vs younger fellas: No disputing it. There’s low probability the old guard withstands the assault on their rankings. If Thiem is health he’s a beast. If he plays efficiently he ought to be able to adjust his schedule to build in rest. Berdych must be fully aware his ranking is vulnerable and relies on his outstanding textbook form and veteran knowledge that his opponents make mistakes down the stretch. That’s never been enough for him. If he were a USA player we would be talking about how if he gets the right draw he’d put himself in position to win a slam. Because he’s not it makes more sense to be more blunt and say it’s up to Berdych to prove he can will himself into position to do that. Sampras proved this and put veterans on notice at a young age. I’m not convinced the big four holds this year. It didn’t in 2016.

  • Andrew Miller · January 7, 2017 at 9:28 am

I was amazed by Pouille at us open because he played like a French version of Agassi. How much ambition does he have? Was this another one time great performance never to be seen again? Does he have the consistency of Schuettler or is he more like flash in the pan Ginepri who reaches a us open semifinal and is the last non Agassi non Roddick player to do that. A brilliant effort that he never replicated perhaps because of the Davis cup snub that favored Blake even though PMac said he’d base his 2005 year end Davis cup decision between both players on how well they did in that USOPEn

Yet another example of pmac conflicting Davis cup legacy. Yes he won a Davis cup. But he was no Yuri Tarposhev. And arguably other Davis cup coaches did more with less. I’ve said this before but Coach Courier never had the team McEnroe had, the luxury of several top ten or top fifteen players plus the Bryans in their prime. PMac did well, but I will always question his judgement and choices and the wisdom or lack of wisdom in playing favorites.
Now maybe it’s unfair after all in 2004 us vs Spain , Spain put up Nadal over 2003 French Open champ Ferrero and the rest is history – Rafa handed an epic defeat to Wimbledon finalist Roddick and thus the legend of Nadal took flight. Hard to argue in hindsight even though Ferrero was humiliated. Though Roddick in general owned Ferrero I think Ferrero, chicken pox and all, thought he could out duel Roddick on clay. Ferrero also played Davis Cup hero in a Davis cup tie later in his career, and he played dubs in the Seville 2004 tie as well, losing badly to a must win Bryans squad.
Point is Spain involved a full rotation of players and there was a quid pro quo, if you don’t play today we’ll get you in tomorrow or next time. That wasn’t team PMac. For PMac it was I’m the decider rankings be darned. I think it was am epically poor way to manage and I’m not convinced PMac has a great legacy in the sport outside of his announcing. I’d argue NO.

  • catherine bell · January 7, 2017 at 9:29 am

    Scoop –

What you say is no doubt true but my Warhol misquote was specifically about the WTA in general.

(Well, I thought it was funny anyway)

BTW – Warhol went to Flushing Meadows a couple of times – he describes watching Connors/McEnroe in his Diary. And Gerulaitis & Co were hanging out with his crowd in the 70s – Warhol did a screen print of Gerulaitis.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 7, 2017 at 9:35 am

Berdych is your ATP Senor Consistency who just slightly lacks that little extra ingredient X to go all the way – Hard to see it happening for Big Berd who is this era’s Todd artin or Greg Rusedski or Cedric Pioline –

  • Andrew Miller · January 7, 2017 at 9:39 am

Sorry about PMAC rant. Trying to say the stars are aligned for top younger players from Milos to Pouille to upend the status quo. I don’t see the big four holding at all – maybe it holds for Australia but I have huge doubts come French Open time. Maybe Nadal returns to champ there but the more interesting question is who he faces and who is around for the semis/ remember DelPo made the 2009 French semis and lost a tough match to Fed before returning the favor in the 2009 USOPEn , any of the younger players could do this and Raomic is positioned for it.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 7, 2017 at 9:39 am

Forgot about that Andrew – of Patrick favoring Blake over Ginepri- could it have been an early evidence of ‘black privilege’? Very tough call but Patrick did not follow his own criteria – Ginepri was a helluva player with a wicked topspin forehand but unproven in Davis Cup – Love Pouille’s arsenal and focus and this French heavyweight will be a force –

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 7, 2017 at 9:40 am

Catherine: I read a Warhol book years ago and it would be cool to read his words about tennis -Guess Warhol did not catch tennis fever if he only went out to the US Open twice ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Andrew Miller · January 7, 2017 at 10:06 am

Scoop, Blake beat Nadal easily in the usope2005 and like Gimepri lost to Agassi in five sets but with match points. Isn’t it more likely that PMAC favored Blake because Blake destroyed Nadal on his way to holding match points against usope2005 finalist Agassi versus Gimepri who couldn’t get the job done against Federer in Cincinnati earlier that summer and then couldn’t get job done again against old man Agassi. I think it makes more sense this way. As much as I don’t want to credit pmac this choice makes a lot more sense. The spadea decision was ridiculous.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 7, 2017 at 10:13 am

Andrew: Rafa of 2005 was very young Rafa with only one Roland Garros title – so Blake beating that Rafa is not nearly as valuable as it looks now especially on hard courts which Rafa was still too defensive on and not nearly yet the force he would later be – Do you think Ginepri got shafted by Patrick? Or was it a fair call as back then Blake was high ranked than Gineps –

  • Andrew Miller · January 7, 2017 at 10:56 am

Must have been PMAC close call. I’m not sure PMAC set up clear criteria for the Davis cup squad and seemed to confuse players unnecessarily. Recall PMACs decision on playing Agassi in Cars

  • Andrew Miller · January 7, 2017 at 10:58 am

Carson wasn’t a great one for a player that hated slow hard courts:)

  • Andrew Miller · January 7, 2017 at 11:51 am

Scoop tisk tisk Nadal was fresh off grabbing his third masters title in Montreal beating Agassi in that final on a close match for first two thirds of it,after which Agassi complained and got down on himself. So Nadal came into usopem on a hot streak and the storyline going into usopem was whether Federer and would have a final with Nadal. Blake beat Nadal three straight times. Lets not deny Blake his due.

  • catherine bell · January 7, 2017 at 2:00 pm

    Scoop –

I found the Warhol reference – it was Forest Hills he went to, in 1979, and no he doesn’t seem a great enthusiast for tennis:

‘Drove to Forest Hills. Had good seats. Went to the locker room. Billie Jean King said hello. Watched Martina Navratilova and Tracy Austin play, but I hate watching girls play. I hate the way they they play, they just don’t play that well. I can’t stand it.
McEnroe and Connors played each other, and they’re the same kind of people, the same type’.

I have to agree about Tracy Austin, my least favourite player of all time, but Warhol’s perspective on McEnroe/Connors is unusual.

  • Hartt · January 7, 2017 at 2:27 pm

Any thoughts on the Murray vs. Djokovic match? It was certainly a close, exciting one. Will the Novak victory have a bearing on the AO?
