Cool Courts…Atlantic City

AC

By Christian Koskorelos

Imagine playing tennis and there’s a beach right behind you. Well, in Atlantic City, just ten blocks from the Revel Casino on the north end of the famous boardwalk, there’s a court, where you can hear the waves crashing into the sand, as you hit a forehand.

This beautiful, good conditioned tennis court stands out on a public street with a few homes surrounding, followed by a set of bleachers, sand, and a basketball court in which a few kids were playing that day. Just a ten minute walk south are the famous casinos Trump Taj Mahal, Showboat, and the brand new modern Revel.

If you ever have the chance to play tennis on this court, you will enjoy the foreign feeling of hitting a backhand – and then turning around and looking out into the Atlantic Ocean. Or picking up a tennis ball with beach sand in the yellow fuzz.

I’ve been going to AC for twenty years for boxing and never knew there was a court there. A few times we wanted to play a match with various boxing writers but we all assumed there was no court in the area. How wrong we were. This court looks in perfect condition. Bet it needs some windscreens though )

Looks like it also needs a center net strap, but good to know it’s there. Courts by the ocean are a rare commodity. There are those bevy of courts in Newport, R.I. in between 1st and 2nd beach at the St. George Prep School that are very nice and always open when I’ve gone there.

I wouldn’t have expected a court in Atlantic City to be in such good condition, would have expected a badly deteriorated court. Dan are talking about the court across the street from the Hall of Fame behind the strip mall? Speaking of courts by the beach there’s a really nice pair on Longboat Key which are public. THey are 50 yards from the beach. And the LBK public clay courts but they are about a 200 yard walk to the beach. Long Beach Island has a few courts near the beach also.

Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn is steps away from a Beach. Courts are in horrible shape from wear and Sandy. City has really let a lot of courts in Brooklyn, especially courts along the water, go to hell, cracks all over the place.

Good catch Dan, I hate to play on courts without a center strap

You know it, Harold. Scoop, the courts I’m referring to in Newport are not the ones we’ve played on behind the Hall of Fame. St. George’s Prep School is actually in Middletown right over the Newport border, but there must be like 12-16 courts and as far as I know, they let you come onto the campus and play on them.

I never saw those Dan, I always go to the four hards across Bellevue behind the strip mall. Where we played a couple times.
