A Special Example of Heroic Tennis Perseverance

BallCourtOne of the greatest records in tennis history is Victor Estrella Burgos who battled outside the ATP top 100 until finally cracking the special barrier at age 33 three years ago. We most likely won’t see another player survive that long outside the top hundred where the prestige and earnings are considerably less glamorous.

But Estrella Burgos not only managed to maintain his self belief, dedication and determination but he also was able to reward himself with a steady top 100 ranking for three years and also three ATP titles all won in Quito, Ecuador three years in a row.

I play a lot of USTA tournaments and I think I have found the Eastern Section version of Victor Estrella. His name is Brian Healy. Healy has played USTA Eastern Open tournaments for five years, starting in 2013 up until today. He did not win a single match in five years until just a few weeks ago. And that very first win was a dramatic one, judging by the scoreline: 16 64 12-10 in the super breaker.

I counted the total number of tournaments he’s played so far – 40 tournaments in five years and just one single match win. I’m not going to count the number of bagels.

If there is another player in the world with that kind of dedication, determination and fighting spirit to turn himself into a quality tennis player, I would like to shake his hand, take a picture with him and have his autograph. And I’d also like to do a Biofile with him and post it at this site.

Brian Healy, stand up, you are a tennis hero.

Off topic but – whatever happened to Wozniaki ? Out in straights to Siniakova, Bastad. Caroline was talking big before that match.

Britbox, I would guess around 24 now. Young kid.
