Having a famous name doesn’t help in tennis

Two iconic all time ATP greats have teenaged kids trying their hands at junior and pro tennis but success has been elusive for them.

Guillermo Vilas’s daughter Andanin is 19 year old now and a UTR 7. After an average junior career, Andanin has not been discouraged and has persevered and ventured into the pro game. She played an ITF $15,000 qualies in Antalya in January but lost 60 60 to a UTR 9 in the second round. In the first round of qualies, Vilas won 57 61 10-8 vs a UTR 6.

Andanin’s results in UTR starts in 2017, her match record was 1-6 that year. An Argentine journalist told me at Miami Open about six or seven years ago that when young Andanin was in the 12s in Argentina, “she was winning everything.”

Pete Sampras’ son Ryan plays USTA and UTR Southern California tournaments but has only posted a 1-5 record in 2022. His last match was a 60 60 loss to a UTR 8 in December. But young Ryan is a fighter like his dad – one of his matches was a 16-14 loss in a third set tiebreaker to a UTR 8. Ryan Sampras began competing in 2018 playing boys 12s and 14s tournaments.

Tennis is challenging enough for any player but it has to be extra difficult for someone with a legendary name and famous parent champion. Because every opponent will be extra motivated to try and beat the name “Sampras” or “Vilas.”

Speaking of famous names, Leo Borg is 19 years old and ranked 511. This week he played Chennai Open Challenger as a wildcard but lost first round 61 46 62 to Hamad Medjedovic.

Catherine, you mean ghosts are trying to read tennis-prose.com? I don’t understand…

Don’t know – the message, to my email, seemed to be asking about T-P articles. No one I knew. It looked like spam.

    Naturally I deleted it.

Scoop – I’ve been emailed for the second time by this person calling herself Angela Carter and asking if there are guest posts available on T-P.

It’s annoying but I’ve marked it as spam and hope I have no more trouble. Not hacked I trust.

(Angela Carter was an English novelist BTW)
