Weekend Quotebook

Alexei Popyrin to Stan Wawrinka, after beating him in the Umag final in three sets 67 63 64: “You’re a legend of this sport. For me to play a final against you is an honor. I grew up rooting for you. I rooted for you every single Slam final you played. Honestly man, I love you and I love the love that you have for the sport.”

Wawrinka cried during his finalist speech: “I know it’s so stupid to cry, but I love this sport so much. You make it really special. Amazing week. Hopefully I can come back. Thank you for the support. Thank you for being here. Hopefully I see you next year.”

Atlanta champion Taylor Fritz after beating Vukic to win Atlanta: “I felt so welcome and at home this week in Atlanta. I’ve been coming back here for so many years. I’m so happy to finally get the title.. I’m not from Atlanta, but it felt like I was because the support was just crazy all week long.”

Former WTA no. 12 Qiang Wang is engaged. She may make a comeback to tennis.

Wimbledon quarterfinalist Christopher Eubanks on GOAT debate: “You can argue that Federer meant more to the sport. I’m not really going to argue on that, if that’s what your GOAT means. Mine is just best all around tennis player. Djokovic is probably going to be the best out of everyone, I’d say personally.”

Jimmy Arias says WTA no. 1 Iga Swiatek isn’t great for tennis: “I don’t think she’s been great for women’s tennis because she wears her hat so low that you can’t even see her face or eyes during the match, so you don’t get a connection as much as you could… I want to see her personality.”

Andy Murray: “I’m totally behind equal prize money. I always felt like when we’re competing at the same event on the same courts, we should be playing for the same prize money. But I think for it ever to become truly equal, the WTA and the ATP are actually going to work as one.”

What’s next, equal prize money for winners and losers?

Jimmy Arias’ comment must rank as óne of the móst idiotic in the history óf sport.

Several reasons why Iga might wear her cap low. She doesn’t have to share them with anyone. She probably considers her primary obligation is to win. Not prance around showing off some false ‘personality’.

And BTW I don’t recall Arias overwhelming crowds with the power of his charisma. Kyrgios he wasn’t.

Murray with a dumbass comment. The prize money is merely a cut of the profits from viewership. Moreover, markets always auto-correct. Just like if a person is underpaid at their job, the market will provide another opportunity for this worthwhile person… if the market does not provide, then surely they were being paid what they were worth in the first place. Ridiculous to think that markets don’t auto-correct, like “wisdom of the crowd” to betting markets. The liquidity of betting markets make sure that a wayward betting line gets snapped into place right away.

Agree fully with Eubanks – he said it really well. Federer was a great ambassador for the sport – he had it all: the looks, the polish to his game, the fire, the likeability. Djokovic just one notch more the GOAT.

Catherine, I heard some tennis photographers didn’t like Isner wearing his hat low as they said they couldn’t get any good photos of his face on court in battle. Then, not sure why, he put his cap backwards, not sure if it was to help photographers as I suspect word of the photographers probably was relayed back to Isner. Iga’s hat never bothered me, nor did Courier or Henin’s or Thiem’s. Besides Hewitt, Iga it’s hard to think of any perpetual hat wearer’s who won Grand Slams.

Cory, I guess Murray has decided it’s best for his long term image to sell out to the Billie Jean King equality scam agenda. He has more to gain by being compliant and politically correct than speaking the truth. Everybody knows what the truth is. But we don’t live in an honest world today. Almost everything is upside down or inverted. Murray sold out.

Nothing to do with tennis but I’d like to share a story about Paul Reubens and his friendship with one of my best friends… Paul “Pee Wee Herman” Reubens Two Decade Friendship with the boxer. http://ringobserver.com/paul-reubens-two-decade…/ #paulreubens #peeweeherman

PS about hats – I think, just from observation, that women players wear visors and peaked caps more now for sun protection outdoors. In the 60s up to the 80s they didn’t seem to do so, going by photos.

Iga wears her cap indoors and out. I wouldn’t be surprised if it wasn’t something to do with concentration. Just a guess.

Catherine, WTA hats first happened with Henin Capriati Hingis Seles Davenport. I don’t remember any big players wearing hats before them. Courier was also one of the first hat guys, indoors or outdoors. Some like Lendl and Becker were outdoor hat wearers.
