The Journey To The U.S. Open Begins In Atlanta

ashe

Atlanta is looking like an interesting tournament. Mardy Fish is back – he’ll play Michael Russell and probably Jack Sock in the second round (if Sock can get by Santiago Giraldo). James Blake plays a qualifier. Isner plays wildcard Christian Harrison. Gee, those Harry brothers always seem to draw Big Iz, the # 1 seed.

Ryan Harrison opens Atlanta with Marinko Matosevic.

Denis Kudla and Rhyne Williams will do battle, in an interesting tussle between young Americans.

Donald Young won two qualifying matches but has one more to go – and it’s a toughie – Tim Smyczek.

Lleyton Hewitt, fresh off the final in Newport, is in the draw.

Ivo Karlovic, newly crowned champion of Colombia, will likely meet #2 seed Kevin Anderson in the second round. Dr. Ivo, age 34, just won his first ATP title in five years.

Veteran Robby Ginepri is still alive in qualies.

Atlanta is looking like a fun tournament to launch the 2013 US Open Series.

Isner is one of the most tenacious hard nosed fiercest competitors in the ATP Andrew. What a fighter he is. Hewitt is way up in that dept. also. I think the grass of Newport favored Hewitt, and hard favors Iz – the ball jumps more on hard. Hewitt really loves that grass in Newport. After his match with Ebden he basically said the reason he plays Newport is because of the surface there which is well suited for his game.

Scoop I think Ryan’s forehand is a liability – his return looks good but when he begins the point on the run and throws in the short ball, he is at the mercy of the opponent. Interestingly Mayotte said in his Tennis-Prose interview that he found some fault with Harrison’s backhand – exactly the opposite! But that was 2011. I wonder what Mayotte’s proposed changes are. On another note, I watched the youtube tape on that kid Rhyne Williams. His game is MUCH better than what I thought – he looks pretty darn tough on hardcourts and his strategy against Ginepri in the particular match I saw really took it to Ginepri.

It is too much to say from a little tape that the future of U.S. tennis has arrived. But I like games of Kudla, Chris Harrison, Rhyne Williams, the forehand wing of Klahn, heck I love Donald Young’s game. I think this is a nice crop of players. I hope they have the support in the player box, etc.

Not sure what to make of Ryan working with Jay Berger but you know, semifinals in Atlanta is not a bad result. This is good work for this part of the summer.

Berger was most definitely not working with Ryan when I saw them both at the Sarasota Challenger. Berger was more with Sock and Johnson and Klahn then. Ryan was with his dad and Tres Davis.
