Tennys Sandgren Stands With Novak Djokovic

By Scoop Malinowski

ATP champion Tennys Sandgren is one of a handful of ATP and WTA players who fully support Novak Djokovic’s fight to play the 2022 Australian Open and attempt to win his record breaking tenth major title down under.

Here are some of his comments made on Glenn Greenwald’s Rumble podcast yesterday.

“I have a lot of support for Novak. I personally find him to be a great inspiration, not just from a tennis perspective but also how he carries himself, watching how he fights through the things he’s going through. How he goes about his training and how meticulous he is, the work ethic he puts into it. I want to see him win. I want to see him play, I want to see him compete. I want to see the drama. I know there’s gonna be a lot of drama. At the end of the day, we love that about sports. “

Given the unique, highly-charged stakes of the situation from a politics and sporting point of view, Sandgren, like all tennis enthusiasts, is absolutely thrilled about the potential fireworks that may be exhibited in Melbourne next week.

“If it does get put into the lens of being just pure sport and we get to watch all this unfold while he’s trying to do something as difficult, as mechanically intense and physically demanding as tennis, it’s going to be something to behold.”

Sandgren is familiar with Djokovic as a competitor from having played him four times, 2018 Wimbledon and US Open, 2020 Cincy and 2021 French Open, only winning one set at their second clash in New York on Ashe Stadium.

“It’s going to be really entertaining. And if he’s able to make a run which I think he will, barring the fact his game and physical skill may not be intact. His spirit and his fight will be intact. His focus will be intact. It’s going to really be something to watch. I’m highly looking forward to it.”

But rumors are rampant the Australian government may still decide to deport Djokovic, or they have already decided but haven’t announced it yet. If this were to happen Sandgren thinks it’s a horrible decision, not only for the sport but also for the future of our freedoms.

“If he’s deported after a judge grants him the visa and the medical exemption was cleared, it’s clearly political. Clearly the authoritarian state of Australia is too overreaching. At that point I really don’t think they should be hosting a Grand Slam. It’s hard enough for international tennis players to get into a country during covid, let along with a country acting in this fashion. And I will not be watching the Australian Open at all. I don’t want to support such an event. It’s going to be interesting.”

The 30 year old Sandgren, currently ranked 93 and winner of one ATP singles title, said he decided to skip playing in Australia this year, one of his most successful events in his career (two QFs and seven match points from a semi) and will focus on rebuilding his ranking back into the top 100 by concentrating playing mostly if not entirely in the US this year.

I remember watching Sandgren come up thru the Challengers… a crackerjack box on the court – you never knew which Sandgren would show up, game to game. I’m really glad he is standing up for freedom instead of getting the jab / paperwork and negotiating with terrorists. I also may not watch the AO. Like you say all the time Scoop, it’s the mental game that gets you in the top 50. Everyone in the top 300 has “good enough” top 50 talent.

Thanks for posting the interview, Scoop. While Glenn Greenwald himself is spouting a lot of gibberish, at least his guest seems to have his head screwed on straight. 😉

    Amen to that, Cory! 👍

I also may not watch the AO.

Didn’t see the whole 50 minutes, but is that what Sandgren actually said? If so, that’s the right attitude! 😎

As I’ve said before, not only will I not watch—I won’t even be following the daily results. So, that means—for two whole weeks—no visits to tennis forums that discuss these results.

Actually, during that time, I’ll probably end up getting a lot more important stuff done! 😁

Cory, people don’t know of they forget Sandgren struggled in the futures and challengers for six years before he finally got his ATP main tour match win at Citi Open at about 1130 at night in a tough three setter vs a Japanese guy Soeda or Sugita. That was his first match win, I saw it and tlaked with him after. I knew that fact. Then he beat Kyrgios in the next round. Kyrgios looked like he was expecting a rollover win and when he saw hw good Sandgren was playing, he ended up quitting. This was 2017.

Sam, that’s the only part I don’t like about this interview is Greenwald’s questions being twice as long as Sandgren’s answers. Greenwald wastes words and should get to the point quicker.

If they do boot Djokovic and it’s still a possibility, it will be hard to support this tournament and the sport itself for this gross injustice. But I still owe it to this site to cover it and also to the next issue of FINAL magazine http://www.finalmagazine.net which I contribute for. Hopefully they will let Djokovic play and the ratings and drama will surpass everything else in tennis history. The rage and fury and revenge Djokovic will play with will be as Sandgren says, “something to behold.”

Scoop, actually I was only talking about his shilling for the “vaccine.” It’s like, someone give this guy a clue! 😝

I guess we should know soon.

Glad that I’m not a tennis journalist! 😄 Well, hope you enjoy your two weeks of covering the Australian Dungeon. 🐉 That sounds like an interesting magazine.

The rage and fury and revenge Djokovic will play with will be as Sandgren says, “something to behold.”

If he does compete, I wish him the best. But it’s hard to see how he could still focus and produce his best tennis under such oppressive conditions. 😕

Officially Tennys is spot on in so many things specially here in Australia were the evidence was found conclusive in their court of law.

“THEY” are protected by their own crime system as Djokovic was criminally treated and as are many refugees locked up indefinitely. Australia is recognized as Sourthern Chinassed.

Down Under indeed! – where the Banana Republic runs child molesting in the open and proven in the court of law to harvest and protect the most disgusting paedo ring by the Judge in charge but although all guilty due to the evidence presented and proven, a suppression order from former Prime Minister keeps them all safe for 90 years. Other Paedo ministers deal the same injustice to its people, sports stars and their young ones on a daily basis. Keep healthy people “locked down under house arrest Down under”

Well, Scoop, you know what they say—talk is cheap! 😏

It seems that the one player who came out of this insanity looking the best is Tennys Sandgren. He did what Djokovic should’ve done—boycotted the tournament. Wisely, he didn’t subject himself to the abuse of tyrants, so there was nothing they could do to him.

He also said that he wishes he were in Australia now, just so that he could pull out of the tournament to support Djokovic. Some might say that’s just talk, but I believe Sandgren actually has the courage to do such a thing.

Anyway, in this month’s Courage and Integrity Open, Sandgren came out the clear winner. 👍Hopefully there will be more such titles for him to come. 🙂

Sam, Don’t forget Sandgren is ranked 96 now and he will drop outside 100, he sacrificed his best tournament where his best results came, two QF at AO and his only ATP title was in Auckland. So he really did sacrifice a lot. No gaurantees he will reenter top 100 again either. Sandgren is a hero.

David, Yes I shockingly learned last week about the horror that elite pedofiles run Australia. The corrupt politicians sealed the info for 90s years. Australia is totally corrupt like USA… PEDOPHILES RUN AUSTRALIA
Did you know that ex PM John Howard placed a 90 year suppression order on highprofile pedos?Due to those suppression orders the 28 Pedos that remain and possibly in high positions of power. FUTURE VICTIMS https://t.co/tC4OEiVHWb https://t.co/LZbGkvNtQI
