Sony Open Biofile: Jiri Vesely Interview

jvese

Tennis Inspiration: If you watch the top guys winning tournaments, getting Grand Slams, you’re just motivated to win the same things. And to be a great player, play the best tournaments and try to win the trophies.

First Tennis Memory: My father is a tennis coach. So the first memory is playing at the wall by myself. That’s the first memory of how I started playing tennis.

First Famous Player You Met Or Encountered: Maybe Ivan Lendl. It was at my club. When I was ten. Sometimes he visits Czech Republic.

Last Book Read: Was Roger Federer and Andre Agassi, tennis books.

Current Car: I have a BMW.

Greatest Sports Moment: There are many great moments in my career already. One of the best memories was when I won the Australian Open on junior circuit. Now in the main circuit, getting to the top hundred was a great moment for me. And getting into the main draw of the 2013 U.S. Open was also a great moment as well. So those are great moments for me and I just try to keep working on myself.

Most Painful Moment: After the match, if you get on the good level and then you lose the match, if you’re the favorite and maybe you should win the match it’s very painful for every player. You have to learn the positive thing out of it. And try to work on it.

Favorite Tournaments: I like all four Grand Slams, for me the most favorite is Australian Open. I have the best memories there. Also I like it very much there. Same in New York. I just like the big cities. It’s great to be there.

Three Athletes You Like To Watch And Follow: In the tennis circuit I like to watch the first three players. Then maybe Federer.

Funniest Players Encountered: I think Novak Djokovic.

Favorite Sport Outside Tennis: Well I like golf. Just started playing in free time. It’s a great sport for getting a little bit out of tennis and everything else. I like watching soccer.

Why Do You Love Playing Tennis: You play for your own self. If you win it’s because you have to fight for it every day. You wake up and you just want to get better and better. I like sports which are only for yourself, not a team sport.

Funny Tennis Memory: Just the match when I sat down in the second set tiebreaker and I was 6-1 down. That was a changeover and turnover from five match points down. A final of a Futures tournament in Czech Republic.

Embarrassing Tennis Memory: When you lose from match point. I’ve lost from that way a couple of times. Lost many times but a few times from match point, that was embarrassing.

People Qualities Most Admired: I like people who are trying to help people, if they can. Friendly. Because it’s not necessary to be arrogant, in any case. You just have to be friendly to people, if you can. Do good things for other people as well.

Saw Vesely in qualies last year. His lower body is not built for a long career. Way too thick in the legs, not too athletic. Not winning any Majors, Masters or getting into top 20
