SANDGREN AND FRATANGELO FEND OFF UPSETS AT THE ELIZABETH MOORE SARASOTA OPEN
Laurel Oak Country Club Hosts $108,320 USTA Pro Circuit Event thru April 21

Sarasota, Fla., April 16, 2019 – The 2nd and 7th American seeds held on in three sets to win their respective matches in the 2nd round of the Sarasota Open.

Early in the day, #7 Bjorn Fratengelo (USA) came back several times to beat little-known Sumit Nagal (IND) 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (2), surviving two match points from 3-5 down in the third set.

Santiago Giraldo escaped a heated battle with Thai-Son Kwiatkowski 5-7, 6-1, 6-4, a hotly contested battle that included verbal altercations during play and on a changeover. But the Colombian prevailed in the end and the two rivals shared a friendly handshake at the end.

Andrea Collarini, a lefty from Argentina, triumphed over Mitch Krueger, 7-6, 6-4, 7-6, another epic that featured plenty of passion and emotion and roaring. I did a very interesting Biofile with Collarini after the match.

The final match of the day (and evening) turned out to be among the most exciting of the week. Former NCAA men’s singles winner Ryan Shane nearly knocked off the heavily-favored #2 Tennys Sandgren. Shane was hot, hitting line after line, but Sandgren’s experience paid off, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 7-6 (4).

Tennis resumes at 10am.

    Scoop,

How is the crowd at the Sarasota Open? Do they charge an admission fee? I imagine in that part of Florida where tennis is very big, even though there are no Jack Sock’s or Izzie’s there, this Challenger would draw a good crowd.

You should ask Sandgren about what is happening to men’s tennis in America. That was an interesting article about the egress of tournaments in the U.S. Tennys, Johnson and Harrison all look like they’ve hit the dumps this year. Their games and results have really slid. Donald Young, Kozlov, Paul, Rubin, Escobedo and Donaldson all preceded them in this cavalcade down the rankings. What is going on with American men’s tennis, especially when only a couple of years ago it held so much promise.

Good crowds Dan, above expectations. I will try to ask Tennys about that. We chatted for about 30 minutes yesterday before his Shane match. Check out my new article about tennys, amazing moment happened in that match.
