Nadal vs. Federer SF Melbourne: Live Report

Fed jumps up 3-0. Serve and volley and a dropper on successive points.

Rafa regains a foothold with some batterings of Fed’s backhand to get on the board 1-3.

But Roger holds again 4-1, battering Rafa’s backhand corner and then hitting forehand winners into the open court. “Nadal is flustered,” comments Patrick McEnroe. Fed is serving and playing perfectly. “Nadal needs to get that first serve percentage up so he can dictate with the forehand,” says Patrick.

Patrick Rafter is amazed by how much pace both players can generate on the stretch, informs Darren Cahill at courtside.
A Nadal ace out side makes it 2-4.

Fed nets a forehand off the backhand return of Rafa, 0-15. 14 out of 15 first serves by Roger so far. Fed forehand strike, 15-all.

“These are the moments when it does get close it favors Nadal,” says P Mac. As if on cue, Nadal hits a winner off an indecisive Fed serve and volley attempt down the middle, and breaks Roger, the match is now on serve at 3-4.

“You can see Federer is starting to think about things and that’s when he gets in trouble, he has to be decisive,” Patrick Mac. Rafa goes up 40-love. “Wow that’s three awful shanks in the game, and it’s 4-all,” says Chris Fowler. “Didn’t see this change in momentum coming.” 4-all suddenly.

“Federer desperately needs this game,” Pat Mac. He gets it – Fed holds at love with a quick game. Fed aces then tosses the ball in his pocket away with a hint of frustration as he walks to his chair. He has let Rafa off the hook. Still it’s 5-4 Fed, on serve.

Nadal holds at love, 5-all. “If you’re in the Nadal camp right now you’d sign up for this in a heartbeat,” says Pat Mac.

We head to the inevitable tiebreak. Both players had the same TB records last year, 20-9. Fed jumps up 2-0 with a big return. Pat Mac says the TB is more important for Fed to win, Nadal is a better come from behind player. 3-1 Fed. Ace, 4-1 Fed. Nadal pulls Fed wide to his forehand then into the open court for a winner, 4-2.

Fed volley winner off a Nadal backhand slice off a long rally. Fed with another volley winner, this one a marvelous low backhand. 6-3 Fed. Nadal wins two points on his serve, 5-6. Fed will try to serve it out…he does when a Nadal backhand is long. Fed lets out a roar, he has won the first set.

Second set:

Roger breaks Rafa at love, then Rafa breaks Roger at love. 1-1. I think we’re gonna have a very long match here. At 30-all Nadal wins a long point with a forehand deep off a short ball which Fed’s forehand nets. Fed mutters to his camp box after this point, for some reason. But it was a perfect point by Rafa. Nadal holds, 2-1.

At 3-2 Nadal breaks Fed with two amazing shots, which elicit “Hello!” and “Oh come on!” from Patrick Mac, the gamewinner was a backhand winner up the line by Rafa after Fed was in control. Amazing game by Rafa. 4-2 Rafa. Nadal serving, 30-all, big point…but Fed nets a backhand return. “Nadal has own more free points on his serve this set,” notes Pat Mac. THen another Fed missed backhand return, it’s 5-2 Rafa. Fireworks break.

Rafa breaks Fed to win set 62.

Third set

Rafa holds serve at love. 1-0. Rafa wins 11 straight points since fireworks break, Fed looks annoyed. Fed gets back to duece. “Fed has to show him he’s in for a dogfight, he has to show him,” says Pat Mac. Fed ends up holding with two successful droppers to the Rafa backhand side. 1-all

Rafa ends up taking the set in a tiebreak, 7-5. Pat Mac comments during the set that Fed is unwilling to perpetually attack the Nadal backhand corner (like Djokovic did last year) becuase it’s “almost boring” for Fed to play like that. Yet on the few points he does attack the Rafa backhand he is successful. Excellent surmise by Pat Mac who also asks, “Can Federer come off the mat to beat his greatest rival?” He has never done that, to my knowledge, well maybe from two sets down in Miami final many years ago but in a slam? Don’t think so.

Fourth set

Roger holds at love 1-0. Rafa holds too. 1-1.

Rafa ends up winning fourth set 6-4, Pat Mac says it’s “the same old story”, Rafa “willed his way to victory.”

Rafa now 8-2 vs. Roger in majors and 18-9 career. But Rafa tells Jim Courier after that he still sees Roger in front of him, so humble. Rafa is into the Australian Open final, will attempt to win his 11th major title.

@scoop “well maybe from two sets down in Miami”

Nadal was 18 and had never even played The French at the time let elose won one. I wouldn’t put too much weight in that match.

Fed is actually playing really well (approaching on the forehand notwithstanding) – and he’s still losing.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2012 at 12:26 pm

Agree, that was young Rafa, Fed has never come back from being down against Rafa at his best, great point by P Mac. Roger is playing great here but as usual it’s not enough.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2012 at 12:28 pm

Watching Rafa’s celebration of winning, the pure joy, I think Rafa actually hungers and wants and loves to WIN more than Roger. Roger loves to play tennis more. Don’t get me wrong Rogie loves to win but Rafa really really loves to win. He shows more joy and elation. Just a sudden observation.

  • Michael · January 26, 2012 at 12:33 pm

I just think he’s more emotive. Spanish v. Swiss …..

    Good match.

  • Steve · January 26, 2012 at 12:53 pm

Congrats to Rafa. The first 5 games went exactly as I had imagined it would for most of the match but it didn’t continue. Like that scene from Casino, Rafa put Fed’s head in a vise and kept cranking it tighter.

Via Wilander’s commentary I learned so much about how Rafa & Fed play each other. Fed actually had a plan and was executing it but Rafa was relentless and broke through. There was no plan B and many opportunities to end points at the net didn’t happen.

But know this, Murray & Djoker are thrilled. Federer would have beat either of them.

  • Martin G · January 26, 2012 at 1:07 pm

    It’s about match ups.
    Djoko/Murray must be pleased.

  • Steve · January 26, 2012 at 1:23 pm

Thought it was a little shitty when Nadal challenged a let by Fed esp. after Fed could have drilled him at net.

  • Spirit · January 26, 2012 at 1:53 pm

“But know this, Murray & Djoker are thrilled. Federer would have beat either of them.”

    “It’s about match ups.
    Djoko/Murray must be pleased.”

As far as I know it’s 2:1 for Djokovic against Fed on AO.(Fed’s only win came while Djok was kid)
As far as I know it’s 3:1 for Djok in their last four meeting on GS.(5:4 for Fed in all their meetings).
As far as I know he’s the best player on the world.
As far as I know Murray leads Fed head to head 8:6.
But it’s ok you are just Fed’s fans.
And it’s not about match ups, it’s all about heart.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2012 at 1:57 pm

Fully agree Spirit, Djokovic would very likely have beaten Federer again (as he did in the exo a few weeks ago), though not sure if Murray would have beat Roger who is playing very very well right now. I think Djokovic vs. Fed is the more compelling and challenging match for Djokovic, more so than Nadal. But let’s see if the new 2012 Rafa can prove that a faulty assumption. Welcome to the site Spirit.

  • Steve · January 26, 2012 at 1:58 pm

“Fed’s only win came while Djok was kid” I guess you didn’t watch the FO last year. Spirit are you secretly Jackson Browne?

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2012 at 2:01 pm

Like Pat Mac said, “Same old story.” Federer just can’t come up with something new to offset Rafa, he just uses the same basic tactics, flashy shotmaking, some net attacks, but no sustained attack of the Rafa backhand corner like Djokovic utilizes. It’s like Fed can’t get down and dirty he likes to play tennis as if he’s wearing a tuxedo and doesn’t want to get his hands dirty by grinding it out with Rafa to that known, exploitable area, the Rafa backhand corner. I think Pat Mac has it nailed, playing tennis like that is boring for an artist like Roger. Marcelo Rios had the same stubborness, he preferred to play tennis his way on his terms. Keep in mind, Roger has said many times that Marcelo Rios is one of his favorite players to watch of all time.

  • Steve · January 26, 2012 at 2:10 pm

It wasn’t the same old story actually. Plan A was working. Exploiting Rafa’s backhand, not letting Rafa breathe or take control. Plan B could have been go back to plan A but more aggressively and with hatred. True Dan, Fed shouldn’t try to play pretty & perfect & cute against Nadal he should enter, dare I say it, BEAST MODE!

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2012 at 2:31 pm

No Steve you can’t use the term BEAST MODE in the same sentence of the elegant Roger Federer! No way, we will not allow it on this site, that is warning #1 🙂 Federer can play tennis any way he likes, I think he’s earned that right.

  • Mitch · January 26, 2012 at 2:39 pm

Four straight slam finals for Rafa. Pretty impressive, I wonder how many he would have won if not for Djokovic.

  • Spirit · January 26, 2012 at 10:19 pm

    Thanks Scoop.
I agree about Novak-Roger match up with you.
But these guys were talking like Fed is Djoko’s nemesis.
By the way, I find here more interesting articles about tennis than on tennis.com.

  • Spirit · January 26, 2012 at 10:26 pm

““Fed’s only win came while Djok was kid” I guess you didn’t watch the FO last year. Spirit are you secretly Jackson Browne?

Steve I see you’re smart guy,but I was referring to their AO score.
By the way, I had no idea who is Jackson Browne so I’ve checked on net, and found his music great and very amusing.
    Thanks.

  • Spirit · January 26, 2012 at 10:36 pm

“It’s like Fed can’t get down and dirty he likes to play tennis as if he’s wearing a tuxedo and doesn’t want to get his hands dirty by grinding it out with Rafa to that known, exploitable area, the Rafa backhand corner.

I didn’t get that feeling in Djoko-Fed FO 2011 match.
Fed made it very physical, as he said after that match.
And he was ready to do anything he need to get a win.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2012 at 11:21 pm

Fed WAS Djokovic’s nemesis but this year in 2012 after that blowout in the exo, and Djokovic still on the ascent, I believe Djokovic will now have a handle on Roger this year and will dominate Roger this year. Thanks for the kind words about our site, actually a few other people have said the same thing, that they like our site better than tennis.com which is a fantastic site. Can I ask how did you find out about us? Please spread the word if you dont mind, to your tennis cronies 🙂

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2012 at 11:23 pm

Steve Djokovic should have beat Roger at the FO last year, the crowd was against him and about 90% for Roger and this bothered and inhibited Djokovic, who was afraid to show his fighting spirit and fighting emotions as the pro Roger crowd retaliated against him the few times early in the match when he did. Djokovic is very sensitive about crowd support and when the crowd is against him he never plays his best tennis.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2012 at 11:25 pm

Agree Spirit, Fed did get down and dirty in that match at FO vs. Djok, he REALLY wanted that one as it appears he doesn’t much like Djokovic. I think Fed has a much stronger desire and hunger to beat Djokovic than Rafa. There’s added incentives there. Michael will surely challenge me on that, I’m ready for ya Mike!!

  • Steve · January 26, 2012 at 11:31 pm

Spirit I’m sure you love Jackson Browne. I’m sure it’s an evocation of your soul.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 26, 2012 at 11:51 pm

What in the heck is an “evocation of your soul”??

  • Steve · January 27, 2012 at 4:39 am

Scoop. You’re dead wrong about the FO. Fed played well and served brilliantly. Not his fault the crowd loves him.

Djoker barely esscaped him at the Open. Djoker took a risk and got lucky. IMHO at the US Open. Don’t misunderstand, Djoker is playing amazing tennis and is a nice & funny guy but he’d much rather play Rafa than Fed. Fed’s style which is spontaneous rather than game plan based works against Djoker.

    Dan, exos mean nothing.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 8:36 am

Good morning. Anyone else not on Aussie time crazy enough to wake for Murray-Joker ?

I’d like to pick up on something Steve’s last post. All his points I agree with but this one should be included as one of the fundamental truths of pro tennis:

    “exos mean nothing.”

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 10:52 am

Wake up Scoop. Murray just took the second set. One set all. Rafa has to be very pleased at how this is going. Grinding match.

This ain’t your daddy’s Murray. This is the Lendl version.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 11:07 am

Long first game of 3rd set and ….. Murray blows FIVE break points.

They hosed Joker twice in the first game on line calls.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 11:31 am

Murray is starting to jerk Joker side to side. 4-4.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 11:45 am

Murray saves first set point with his first ace of the set. Set point number two — Murray clean crosscourt forehand winner. Murray approaches net and can’t pull off sck hand overhead smash. Set point number three — WOW. You need to see that one on your DVR. Murray saves it with a drop shot. Murray holds. Huge hold for Murray.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 11:50 am

One obviously noticeable change is Lendl has already got Murray to cut out the mental antics with himself and his box. And I don’t see mommy Murray in the box either.

    5-5, 15-40.

Novak saves the first one when Murray dumps a crosscourt backhand ino the net.

Murray breaks ! Murray serving for the third set.

Pleased to note that whichever way this ends, Dan was dead wrong on how it would play !

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 12:05 pm

I just want to say that Novak has a heck of a backhand lob. 15-15.

Murray overhits a sitter forehand. 15-40.

Saves the first. Novak breaks back.

This must be the third time one broke and the other broke right back. It’s WTA tennis.

    Tiebreak.

3-1 Murray after Joker double faults.

Murray hits a forehand 6 feet long. 3-2.

3-3. Joker ending point at the net.

    4-3. Murray ace.

5-3 Murray. Joker slices a backhand long down the line. A tight shot.

6-3 Murray clean winner, forehand crosscourt. The shot that started off sucking in set one is now ending points.

    6-4. Joker murdering forehands.

Murray service winner takes the third set.

    The tennis Gods mock Dan.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 12:07 pm

    Interesting stat:

Total points won. Nadal 114. Murray 113.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 12:09 pm

I meant Joker not Nadal. Weird Freudian slip.

Why don’t you guys add editing to posts ? It’s done using a WP plugin.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 12:12 pm

More WTA tennis. Quick Joker break after Murray gifts away easy overhead.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2012 at 12:12 pm

Murray looks like a different man here, this is his best stuff. Djokovic still very lethal though

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2012 at 12:16 pm

Observation: Djokovic’s grunt seems so natural and machine-like, Murray’s sounds more overworked almost desperate, uncomfortable. Murray faltering early in the fourth, get ready for a fifth. Michael where is Lendl? Is he even there?

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 12:21 pm

Can’t remember the last time Murray held. We’re going five.

    4-0 Joker.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 12:22 pm

Lendl is where he always is. In the box.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 12:30 pm

Random comment. Oddest thing. Murray wins the coin flip and says “I’ll defer.”. Who does that ?

Murray idiot doesn’t hold so he can start serving I the fifth, Murray looked just awful. Took a total walkabout in the 4th.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2012 at 12:34 pm

Somehow I don’t see him in there. Murray should have called an injury timeout before fifth, at least get a massage and change the flow. Nadal would have.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2012 at 12:35 pm

Murray looks ready to crumble, Djokovic looks fresh and like he wants to be there.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 12:37 pm

Murray wasn’t even moving that first game.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2012 at 12:39 pm

0-1 come on Murray dig deep here, this is it… two big serves 30-15…Murray is fighting here 40-15, FIGHT MURRAY FIGHT…

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2012 at 12:40 pm

Murray is in this thing, he is ready for a fifth set brawl, this might be something special

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2012 at 12:42 pm

WHAT A PT, MURRAY making Djok run run run, huge pt 30 – all

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 12:45 pm

Yeh, that was a great point, Murray won it a few times before he won it.

Do you think Murray wanted to serve second in the fifth (he did to start the match). He didn’t even try the last game of the 4th.

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 12:50 pm

Clutch ace to save break point. Murray grows up.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2012 at 12:52 pm

Mistake for Murray to concede serve to start the fifth. Could be the difference. But he’s looking great right now, very fresh and energy strong. He’s locked in here and making a huge push to win this thing.

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2012 at 12:54 pm

This is looking like their Rome match if it goes down to the wire, we know who has the mental edge though (Djokovic). But this is the new Lendlized Murray…

  • Scoop Malinowski · January 27, 2012 at 12:55 pm

2-2, this is going to be EPIC I can feel it now, fasten your seatbelts

  • Michael · January 27, 2012 at 12:59 pm

Rome was a plus for Murray. He was out of sorts at the time, Joker was in the midst of his epic season yet Murray was inches from beating him – on clay.
