Roland Garros Begins…

Benoit_Paire[1]
Mats Wilander summed up this year’s French Open:

“Heading into the French open it’s more exciting. The regular Tour probably benefits from having one superstar that’s cleaning up everything, or maybe a rivalry. But the French Open and the other slams benefit from having no clear cut favorite. That’s the way it used to be and I think it’s better. I don’t think we want to go there and ask ourselves: Is Nadal going to win a ninth time? That doesn’t excite me at all. It’s much more exciting to think Djokovic is the favorite or Federer has a chance,” said Wilander.

So here we go. Serena beats Lim. Isner vs. Herbert. Venus vs. Bencic. Janowicz vs. Estrella. Federer downs Lacko. Nadal vs. Ginepri. Lleyton Hewitt making his final appearance in Paris? Raonic fends off young Kyrgios in straight sets. Can a Frenchman pull a Yannick Noah? Can the Stanimal follow up his Melbourne and Monte Carlo conquests with a halfway-Grand Slam? Are Dimitrov, Theim, Gulbis and Nishikori ready for prime time? Michelle Larcher De Brito qualified.

Gael Monfils is the greatest dancer in the world (I hope you saw that dance-off video on Chatrier stadium court at the ATP site). Let the games and discussions begin…

An American player is guaranteed of making third round with Sock playing Johnson in the second.

unbelievable stuff ! it would be a miracle if we can get an american in the second week !

And Sock has finally followed my advice to drop the backward hat which made him look like a goofy junior. He has much greater presence without the hat. I think Sock will beat Johnson but I saw Johnson make him quit in Sarasota last year early in the second after Johnson came back won the first set TB. This will be a huge match for both of these players who really need a big win to show for their good seasons so far.

Muguruza looks like a future major champ, this was no fluke win over a flat Serena, she just annihilated her. Serena was trying to fight, she was activating her feet trying to get them going but Muguruza just kept hitting winners. I think Serena is getting tired of the grind. It’s a young girl’s game. I think Maria will get trounced next. Tursunov beats Querrey easy. Same old Sam. Gulbis and Thiem are looking strong, maybe even darkhorses.

Scoop they (bodo) said muguruza hit straight down the middle like dimitrov and nishikori did versus nadal. Ll in oz.

Allowed her to limit the serena creativity on the run. That the case?

Nice dan i did not know sock would play johnson. One of the ironiesof tennis – you have to beat your peers like fed with stan to go on in a tourney.

Btw scoop that duclos thing is messed up. Hope they get him out of that mess up.

Andrew I saw her hit plenty of balls into the corners too. Body serves and balls down the middle to make her move around them were also part of Muguruza’s tactics. It looked a lot like the Ivanovic match in Australia.

Wow she must have played good ball! Ivanovic in oz was the real deal until bouchard outdid her.as scoop would say no passion no w. Genie out-did ivanovic in the fist pump dept!

She looks like a future major champ Andrew. But now the pressure and expectation will be on her. Just like it fell on Ana’s shoulders after she sent Serena home. Ana was the vet against the new kid on the block with nothing to lose Genie with her Army backing her too. That was a great match. Ana could have won it too.

It’s kind of a shame this young Spaniard won because she’s the same cookie-cutter player all these big-hitting, two-fisted girls like Sharapova and Azarenka are. I see no difference in their games. There’s little athleticism to their form and movement. It’s another reason why women’s tennis is for me not a very entertaining or competitively-viable endeavor.

Serena handled herself very well in defeat. It was kind of embarrassing that the broadcast kept televising Oracene Price asleep during much of Venus’ match and seemingly-disinterested during Serena’s. Would’ve been much more interesting if Serena went into a hissy-fit after losing, but she didn’t seem too bothered by her dismissal.

Ana remains a champ. She is showing why she won a major and playing good ball.

Personally i like duval more than most of the next gen womens players with exception of the playerwho i injured who plays rios ball. Jamie hampton. I like how tough genie bouchard and muguruza are. I think the wta next generation will break through and win slams before the next gen mens players who for whatecer reason remain inconsistent and all worse than gasquet!
