James Kirkland, another top boxer who loves tennis

I had the pleasure of doing a Biofile with the highly-touted 32-l (28 KOs) boxer James “The Mandingo Warrior” Kirkland last week at a press conference in New York City. Asked about his favorite sport outside boxing, the Austin, Texas native with dynamite in both fists, answered, ‘People don’t know I like tennis. I like one on one combat sports.’

When I asked the junior middleweight left-hander with a relentless, determined attacking style if he plays tennis he replied? ‘No. I wish I had the skill. But no.’

James’s favorite players to watch? ‘Honestly, I like to watch ’em all. But Serena and her sister. There’s a lot of other great players that I watch. I just love the sport in general.’

Kirkland scored a thrilling 6th-round KO over previously unbeaten prospect Glen Tapia in Atlantic City on Saturday night in Atlantic City. Managed by music star 50 Cent, Kirkland is in line for a world title shot next year.

Makes sense that fighters such as “The Mandingo Warrior” would be drawn to Tennis… Just like Boxing, Tennis is an individual sport that really reveals what someone is made of emotionally & physically!
