I asked Vijay Amritraj if he thinks the serve and volley will ever come back

I asked three-time Newport champion Vijay Amritraj, renowned for his serve and volley style of play in the 70s and 80s, if he thinks his preferred way of playing tennis will ever make a come back to the ATP tour?

“No. I think it went with the Sampras Becker Edberg era. Today the courts are too slow and the balls are too heavy and the players are too tall. It’s not going to come back.”

There you have it from a Tennis Legend. The serve and volley way of playing tennis is now extinct.

Maybe it was Lleyton Hewitt, who in crushing Pete Sampras in straight sets at the U.S. Open final, was the man who unofficially terminated the “serve and volley.”

Eagle Eye Eddie you are correct. I forgot I had a Vijay photo in my archives and instead opted to put in the man who may have unofficially destroyed the serve & volley, Lleyton Hewitt. But I just remembered, thanks to you, and will add a photo I took of Vijay at Newport this year while he was watching his son play Hewitt on center court.
