Here we go, it’s Djokovic vs. Nadal…

P1011207

For the 37th time. Will Djokovic revert to being more ruthless, will he be, as Pancho Segura suggested, more of a “killer”?

Or will Nadal, turn himself into a human tornado, dead set on wreaking havoc yet again on Djokovic, for the sixth time in seven matches?

Who will want it more? We are about to find out…

In the far court wearing dark gray and black socks and shoes, from Spain, Rafa Nadal. On the other side, donned in black shorts and red shirt, from Serbia, the world champion of tennis, Novak Djokovic.

Number one vs. Number two…

Sevetnty one degrees, partly cloudy.

Stay tuned for live updates.

This could be the first grtand slam final where both players are wearing black socks.

  • JP · September 9, 2013 at 5:49 pm

This is embarrassing, show some fight Novak!

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 5:57 pm

It’s like Nadal has become Djokovic’s krytonite. He grows weaker and weaker once Rafa gets ahead. He doesn’t know what to do. His confidence vs. Rafa has been zapped. Rafa has an answer for everything, nothing is working. Djokovic has run out of ideas on how to slay this goliath.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 5:59 pm

It was even for a while but Nadal grunted with desperation, he wanted it more, that little extra firepower and passion earned him the edge. Once he got the edge, he kept it like a stranglehold. Djokvoic has to fight and grind and brawl, make some noise, Djokovic is playing like he’s wearing a damn tuxedo, you have to get down and dirty with in the bullring with this wild insane freak bull. FIGHTT HARDER.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 6:00 pm

FInally Djokovic has started to grunt in the first game of the second set up 40-30 and guess what? HE WON THE POINT. AND GAME. FIGHTTTTTTT HARDER.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 6:11 pm

I think a negative factor for Djokovic is he knows he has to play Davis Cup on Friday vs. Canada. No rest after this two week drain of energy. I was told Djokovic arrived to Boise Idaho on Monday – FOUR full days before the Friday singles. Djok wanted to get familiar with the arena and surroundings. Because of US Open scheduling he can’t do that for the Canada tie. Rafa will probably rest for 2-3 weeks after todays’ final.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 6:12 pm

Djokovic blew break points in the second set second game. Nadal fought back and won the game one-all. Again Djokovic’s big push was thwarted. But he is fighting harder now, grunting and growling like a tiger. He’s in this match now.

  • JP · September 9, 2013 at 6:13 pm

Stop looking at your box like it is a fluke he is beating you. Losing is one thing but acting like a spoiled brat is another.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 6:14 pm

Djokovic still has not won that huge point or series of points in a row to scare Rafa, to make one of his patented yells or fist pumps. But no, there it was right there. A drop backhand volley for 40-l5. Djok’s intensity is higher now. WE HAVE A MATCH NOW.

  • JP · September 9, 2013 at 6:21 pm

He shows no sign of being able to break Nadal’s game down, is there any pattern that is working?

  • Andrew Miller · September 9, 2013 at 6:34 pm

    Djoko is still in this.

  • Doogie · September 9, 2013 at 6:39 pm

I can see this ending in 3

  • JP · September 9, 2013 at 6:53 pm

    We both were wrong

  • DanM · September 9, 2013 at 7:14 pm

Geez, you people were blowing Djoko out of the water and now he’s up a break now in the third set and Nadal just had to fight like the dickens to hold to make it 2-1 Djoko. The Serb is breaking down Nadal’s game and putting him on the defensive by hitting sizzling deep shots. It is amazing because he looked like he wouldn’t be able to lift his level.

  • JP · September 9, 2013 at 7:22 pm

Yeah but this is a night and day turnaround!

  • DanM · September 9, 2013 at 7:49 pm

This is a Battle Royale! Do you believe that Nadal at 4-all just held after being down triple break point! This is amazing tennis. It’s not my cup of tea with one player attacking and the other counter-punching, but how can you not appreciate this tennis?

  • Doogie · September 9, 2013 at 7:55 pm

Imo it is one of worst matches these two have played each other. Nole has given away two service games with ues.

It is a thriller yes but not on high level.

  • JP · September 9, 2013 at 7:55 pm

We are lucky to be able to watch matches like these two give us.

  • DanM · September 9, 2013 at 8:07 pm

Can’t agree with you, Doogie. By the way, what time is it? You must be watching this match in the middle of the morning. I think the pace and the spin of these shots is epic and they are both forcing each other to reach for their deepest competitive spirit. Djoko, to me, looks like the aggressor now, but he’s not being successful finishing at the net.

Let me see, he hires Fibak to tutor him on the volley and Todd Martin. Neither of these guys were really volley masters. Dubious decision.

  • JP · September 9, 2013 at 8:07 pm

Djokovic only had one run in him …

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 8:14 pm

I can’t believe Rafa stole that third set and the first game of the fourth. This guy is a freak of all freaks. The same pattern from the last two FO is happening here. Djokovic somehow manages to get control of match but then Rafa goes berserk and steals it away. Listen to all the noise he is making. I have never heard a human being express such passion and agony and desperation in the critical points in a tennis match. What a match. What a performance by Nadal. What a difference trying to win a major final from Nadal and from any other major final player in history. It’s almost impossible to beat Nadal in a major final. This guy never stops coming at you, harder and harder. Djokovic is more talented but Nadal wants it more and has far more sustained intensity and fighting spirit.

  • Doogie · September 9, 2013 at 8:16 pm

There are some good rallys of course – hey here are facing number one and two.

But just look at the ues on important points/games from Djoko. If u have time: Watch again these two breaks he got in 3rd set. This is not Top10 level! Normally only weak players make silly errors on big points.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 8:25 pm

Fantastic match high quality all out brawl on a tennis court, of course their will be mistakes made when both players are playing at this level of skill, speed and intensity. How anyone cannot appreciate this battle is hard to fathom.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 8:27 pm

Djokovic is down 4-one in the fourth set and he looks on his way to defeat. But if anyone can conjure up the energy and hunger to turn this around it’s him. He has the ability to win eight straight games off Rafa, he can do it. But it will take a superhuman effort. Nadal is just physically stronger and as a consequence, mentally stronger.

  • Doogie · September 9, 2013 at 8:28 pm

I am disappointed with this final. Probably I am the only one here who thinks so 🙁

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 8:32 pm

Nadal is just unbeatable right now.

  • Doogie · September 9, 2013 at 8:34 pm

    @scoop

I see have different thoughts about this match 🙂

I did not even see any intensity in 1st and 4th set. And 2 good sets does not make a high quality and high intensity match imo.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 8:37 pm

No human being ever wanted to win more than Nadal. They might pump him up with liquid desire and hunger from a science laboratory or something. It’s just not normal how hard he fights. He regained the mental edge from Djokovic at the FO last year and kept it this year, kept it still in Montreal and once again, when Djokovic threatened him today, Rafa withstood the storm and stymied Djokovic. Djokovic just can’t understand or comprehend how Nadal can withstand his best tennis. It’s like when a KO puncher lands his best shots and the other boxer endures it. It kills something inside him and then he falls apart. Nadal has the formula and the tactics and the ability to make the great Djokovic crumble like a crumb cake. Fascinating match. Nadal could now go on a rampage and win the grand slam next year.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 8:55 pm

What a dominant performance. I thought Nadal was going to wilt after Djoko took the second set and was up 2-0 in the third. I agree with you, Doogie, after the second set, the level of play dropped down a lot, but what’s Djoko to do? He could not find a way to pierce Nadal’s armor. I think Djoko can only beat Nadal in Miami and Aussie O where it’s very hot and he can wear Rafa down.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 9, 2013 at 8:55 pm

Rafa is the greatest tennis warrior of all time, no question about it.

  • Andrew Miller · September 9, 2013 at 9:11 pm

I don’t get Nadal. I should read his book.

  • Andrew Miller · September 9, 2013 at 9:28 pm

Ok pretty sure Toni Nadal, Nadal and the uncles have an end game so that Nadal is, from slam count, the undisputed best player in history. He has 13 slams. Four short of course of Federer. At age 27 – and he just turned 27 – 5 slams is not impossible.

Nadal has been winning slams now for 9 years. Hard to believe that will change next year: no one’s close. I think Djokovic should regain his top form – you don’t make the final of every slam without being in top form. But it’s hard to see him beating Nadal at Nadal’s new best.

  • gustarhymes · September 9, 2013 at 10:00 pm

Wow. The experts picked Rafa in 4. I have to say Djoker played a great match. I agree with DanM that he made costly volley mistakes. The forehand at 30 all in the 3rd set at 5-4 Nadal, was a gimmee for Djoker. Match could have gone either way.

I think Djoker lost confidence since the FO and loss to Murray at Wimbledon.

Now that Nadal is at slam 13, with record for most consecutive years winning a major, where does he rank all time. I think he is second to Fed for now. One more Oz title or Wimbledon will make him equal or greater on a qualitative level with either all majors twice or all surfaces 3 times. Combine the winning head to head with Fed, and he can be arguably the true GOAT. That being said, even I don’t think he can win the Grand Slam next year Scoop. How many slams does Rafa have in him after all these years, the pundits have said he wouldn’t last. I predicted 10-12 for him. But it looks like he may get to 16 or 17. He has a chance at winning major for next 2 years at least.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 10, 2013 at 8:23 am

Nadal just might tie Federer’s seventeen next year at this rate. He looks unbeatable. Djokovic really should have won yesterday and the last two FOs. Djokovic will have a hard time recovering from this devastating KO loss to Nadal. He is simply unequipped to subdue this Spanish rampaging bull.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 10, 2013 at 8:28 am

Nice to have you back Gustarhymes. I think a slam next year is very attainable for Rafa. Who is going to challenge him? Djokovic can’t get it done anymore and he may not be able to refine that old formula he had two years ago, that formula is now obsolete. Murray? Possibly, if he can get his head back on right. Federer? No chance. Djokovic is really the only one Rafa has to worry about but I think he has him under control now. Janowicz is a threat. Gulbis can be. These guys are long shots. Rafa just might rampage his way through tennis next year and dominate. This was a shattering and devastating loss for poor Djokovic. He has lost six of the last seven to Rafa.

  • Dan Markowitz · September 10, 2013 at 8:38 am

    Scoop,

Why do you say Djoko should’ve won this match? It isn’t like he was up 2 sets to 1 and had love-40 on Nadal’s serve in the 4th set.

Jerzy had a sub-par with the exception of Wimbledon, and was it Rome, where he did well. Gulbis, that boat has left the slip. Nadal has two competitors next year and they are Djoko and Murray. I wouldn’t be surprised if like this year, they made the slam finals of all four events.

How about Uncle Toni saying Rafa doesn’t run as well as he used to. It’s a bummer to be 27 and at the prime of your life. According to Uncle T, he’s already on the decline physically.

  • Kujo · September 10, 2013 at 9:14 am

The only thing that may slow Nadal down at this point is that knee. As long as it holds up, he’s a lock to match Fed’s 17, and very likely surpass it.

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 10, 2013 at 9:28 am

I thought Djokovic had control of the match in the third set but he just can’t subdue this wild dog and get the leash around his collar. Nadal has uncanny ability to avoid that leash and then apply it to the opponent. Amazing ability. Djokovic has the know-how and the ability to leach Rafa and tie him up to the pole but he’s just not strong enough to do it. It’s like the shark hunter trying to harpoon the great white and haul him in. Like in Jaws. They had the shark but then the shark turns the tables. Rafa always turns the tables and makes Djokovic his Captain Quint. )

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 10, 2013 at 9:29 am

Worries about Nadal’s knees? Come on, he was running around the court like a young Walter Payton yesterday. That knee is one hundred percent perfect. They don’t even need to tape or ice it anymore. What does that tell you? Rafa may not be moving as well as when he was a teenager or in his early 20s but he’s still got plenty of giddyup, raw speed, anticipation and deft quickness.

  • Harold · September 10, 2013 at 10:25 am

Thonk all GOAT discussions are over. Nadal is the one. 13 Majors and not done yet, 3 DC’s, Olympic Gold . Dominated someone with 17 Majors when that guy was in his prime. 22-15 against a guy with 6 Majors and counting and a huge winning record against the rest of the top 10 of his gen.

Federer might have been had most visually pleasing game, but you have to give props to Nadal. Scary where he has taken defense to offense tennis. Every point is a war

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 10, 2013 at 11:20 am

Harold, it’s really not an argument anymore. Nadal is the ONE. Nadal first showed it when he was seventeen and beating Federer 63 63 in Miami. Now he’s still getting better and stronger and still playing awe inspiring tennis and achieving incredible feats.

  • CS3 · September 10, 2013 at 12:54 pm

Another tremendous battle in every sense of the word between the Top 2 Tennis Players on the planet… Credit where it’s due to Novak for playing superb tennis befitting of a guy who has been a very worthy #1 in the world for most of the last 2 years… He always makes guys work extremely hard to beat him & has my full respect/appreciation for being Rafa’s ONLY true challenge & consistent competition… All that said, Rafa is simply the Greatest Competitor & Champion ever to step foot on a tennis court… The way he overcomes obstacles on & off the court is simply astonishing… An athletic, determined PHENOM the likes of which Tennis has never before seen & likely won’t see again… The way Rafa handles adversity in the biggest matches during the most important points is why he’s so DOMINANT-the jaw dropping physical talent doesn’t hurt either… Lol No player has ever not only consistently beaten the greats of his era but also ripped their hearts out & broken their spirit/will to compete in the process the way Rafa has on so many occasions… He is poised to take over the sport yet again for the foreseeable future though nothing is a given… PSYCHOLOGICALLY CRUSHING DEFEAT for Novak who threw haymakers left & right at Rafa during the 2nd & 3rd sets in which he was displaying 2011 like Novak form & Rafa just kept coming like a STORMING BULL or should I say like Rocky Balboa versus Apollo Creed in parts I & II… Some serious doubts have to be entering Novak’s head these days… His CAREER DEFINING MOMENT & VICTORY, the EPIC ’12 Australian Open Title over Rafa, may indeed end up being a blessing & curse because it gave Rafa renewed belief even in valiant defeat while awakening AN UNCONTROLLABLE MONSTER that Novak can no longer handle… The ’14 Australian Open is going to be vital I believe for Novak’s future prospects in Grand Slams… He is literally on the brink of reverting back to pre 2011 form with the mental state he’s in after so many deflating defeats in the MOST IMPORTANT MATCHES against Rafa even Murray but more so Rafa… The way Rafa has turned the tide of this rivalry back in his favor quite possibly for good is as impressive as his many significant accomplishments are IMO which is say something… Congrats Rafa for reclaiming your status as THE BEST IN THE WORLD & clearly GOAT!! VAMOS

  • Scoop Malinowski · September 10, 2013 at 1:05 pm

CS3 There was a solemn hopelessness in the Djokovic box as they saw the match slipping away. This was a crushing loss for Djokovic. He has to be wondering in his own head, what can I do to beat this monster? There may be no answer no solutions. Djokovic may have had his time in the sun and passed his peak.

  • CS3 · September 10, 2013 at 1:33 pm

Just have to see if Novak has it in him to regroup… Talent wise he certainly does but from a mental standpoint, it’s far from a given… Novak may be Rafa’s most evenly matched opponent in terms of physical & strategic play on the court but from an overcoming & handling adversity standpoint, he’s nowhere near Rafa’s league & falls way short of possessing Rafa’s mental strength/unbreakable determination & will to compete… Alarming for Novak & his camp the way he’s really reverted back to FALLING APART & basically TAPPING OUT in the Biggest Matches like he has this year!!

  • Harold · September 10, 2013 at 3:13 pm

The camera work at the Open was awesome..Towards the end of the match there was a shot of Djok, and his team was in the background looking defeated..Just great direction.

  • Andrew Miller · September 10, 2013 at 7:13 pm

Uncle Toni is all about psyching out the opponent – if he says Nasals knees are fragile the opponent thinks Rafa is slow and then sees a faster than ever Rafa. If Toni says he isn’t as fast opponents try to run him and Rafa shows off the wheels. Rafa never admits he is the world’s best player- he goes out of his way to overestimate ever opponent and then gives the beat down of an athletic lifetime.

Either Toni makes Nadal actually paranoid to prepare or its one big elaborate PR thing to lower opponents expectations before smashing them on court. So many fans call it modesty but if you read the press conference after every win Nasal gives an Agassi like assessment of his opponent ( no favoritism for Ryan Harrison for example ). Nadal knows exactly what he is doing and where he stands against opponents.

Quit the false modesty nadal. I will buy that his knees hurt and that his game worsens them but not the humility schtick. This guy knows he’s one of the best of all time. If not why write an autobiography before your career is up ?

Take that humility . Nadal has you beat also !

  • Andrew Miller · September 10, 2013 at 7:15 pm

Djokovic is younger and his game is more compact. He can still beat nadal.

  • Andrew Miller · September 10, 2013 at 7:18 pm

To cs3 Sampras and federer certainly crushed opponents. Don’t think nadal , who considers Sampras very highly didn’t get that will and outlook from other greats of the sport. There is a baton of sorts you know.

  • CS3 · September 10, 2013 at 8:05 pm

Other greats have broken the spirits of their foes as well but none have done it to the extent that Rafa has… Novak does have the game to still defeat Rafa & will win some of their future matches… I don’t see Novak dominating Rafa again however… More compact or not, Rafa is the better player when healthy & in top form which there’s nothing really to dispute that opinion… Rafa has the technical, balanced tennis game to hang with Novak & more importantly has the relentless determination & fighting spirit to break Novak down emotionally which he’s done more than once… Novak isn’t as tough mentally as Rafa & FALLS APART in matches which Rafa pretty much never does… Sampras was amazing without a doubt is among the Top 3 players I’ve ever seen… Rafa is a TENNIS MACHINE however who’s a PHENOM unlike any I have ever before seen & is IMO the pretty clear GOAT… 1 more Australian Open Title I think would solidify that designation for Rafa as it would make him a Double Career Grand Slam Champion which is something that hasn’t been accomplished since Rod Laver… I’m pretty sure that’s on Rafa’s to do list & Rafa’s to do list these days is something only his knees can prevent from happening!!

  • CS3 · September 10, 2013 at 8:13 pm

All Great Champions have been inspired by those who came before them I’m well aware Andrew… It’s just Rafa’s combination of will to go along with skill is on a whole other level… Jimmy Connors’ like effort & passion along with Bjon Borg kind of special ability & athleticism on a tennis court… Novak is younger but only by a year so that youth advantage really isn’t much of an edge at all… 2011 was Novak’s PEAK YEAR & it’s very likely the results he produced that year including his unprecedented, extended dominance of Rafa over a series of matches was a 1 year only kind of thing… Novak was supposed to truly take over & start dominating the Grand Slams-DIDN’T TURN OUT THAT WAY… No doubt Novak is an All Time Great but he’ll always be #3 in the era of Roger-Rafa or more correctly Rafa-Roger… If Novak is the 3rd best player of an era, THAT’S A VERY SPECIAL & DAMN GOOD ERA because he is 1 of the Best & Most Complete Players in Tennis History… CREDIT WHERE IT’S DUE!!
