Henk Abbink Reports From Acapulco, Mexico

Supreme photographer Henk Abbink was in Acapulco, Mexico this week for the ATP/WTA Abierto Mexicano Telcel combined event. Here are some of his observations from the week, including Rafael Nadal’s 60 62 destruction of David Ferrer in the final.

The champion eyes the target.

The technique of David Ferrer.

El Campeon de Acapulco, Rafa Nadal.

The emotions of triumph.

Words from the combatants:

David: “Rafa played a great match, me not so great. But if I would have a great day and Rafa too, he would still beat me because he’s better!”

Rafa: “I played better than when I had my best matches.”

This is a spectacular win by Rafa firmly establishing that he is back in a big way and maybe even better and stronger than ever before, based on Rafa saying he felt he played better in this final than in some of his best matches. This will be a tremendous boost for the sport as we head into the Masters Series events before the French Open. Thanks for taking us to Mexico Henk, well done.

Henk must be a pro photographer. Those photos are quite excellent.

Maybe with the South American swing Rafa is echoing his 2005 run from potentially good player to superstar. He had played South America that year, racking up 1 loss and mostly wins and confidence. Wonder if that played to Uncle Toni, probably also to sponsors to build Rafa’s name in South America. Win-win.

Henk is very good, met him in Delray about three years ago, he’s a solid pro and a good guy. Rafa sure did look shaky losing to Zeballos but he obviously has fixed the problem and rediscovered his A game.
