Did Federer Betray Uniqlo?

This week on Instagram Roger Federer announced that On has signed to endorse Iga Swiatek and Ben Shelton, who will wear On shoes and attire for competition on the WTA and ATP Tours, respectively.

Federer is an investor in the Switzerland-based company On and he wears On shoes – Federer wore On shoes at Laver Cup last year and in his ATP matches since 2021.

But Federer is also contracted to another attire company Uniqlo.

It is widely known that the Japanese company Uniqlo signed Federer for an estimated $300 million for ten years ($30 million per year) in 2018.

If the Federer deal with Uniqlo is still active – and I have not seen any reports that the ten-year contract has lapsed when Federer retired last year – then it is a curious decision by Federer to be actively promoting the business activities of On, a competitor of Uniqlo.

Federer’s wikipedia page states that “became a shareholder (in On) in November 2019.”

One thing is for certain: Uniqlo cannot be overjoyed by seeing it’s $300 million dollar man promoting On’s high profile sponsorship of Swiatek and Shelton on social media, which may be a breach of contract.
