Crushed In Tampa

Played a USTA tournament this weekend in Tampa at Arbor Green. As the #1 seed I got a bye and a SF win over a heavyset hard hitter from Orlando Isleworth, who says he plays a lot with Bill Donadio, half of one of the best age group doubles teams in the nation with Richard Schmidt. But this guy had to play a first match before our’s and he was a bit tired and slow.

The final was a different story. My opponent used to play Courier and Agassi in Florida on the junior circuit. After the match he told me he used to whoop Courier, he said Courier’s mom used to call his mom to set up matches between the boys and he would be in the background telling his mom, “He (Courier) stinks.” But then Courier got really good when he was 16-17, he just started “killing the ball.”

He also played Agassi at a tournament at Sarasota Bath & Racquet and it was 22 degree and Agassi was wearing jeans and a hooded sweatshirt, all he could see were Agassi’s eyeballs. Peter said he lost love and love in like 24 minutes to Agassi.

Our match today was good at some moments. I wasn’t used to his level of firepower early and quickly was in a 0-4 hole. This guy hit the ball a ton, perfect form, heavy balls, but then I found my footing after losing the first set 6-2.

I went up 2-0 in the second but then he regained his A game and won the next three. I stole the next two and then connected on a patented backhand crosscourt winner to sneak up 5-4. Vamos!

But that was my last moment of glory. He raised his level again and I was helpless. 62 75, game set and match. Too much firepower, heavy serves, heavy kickers, this guy was too good.

The photo above is the prize the tourney director Alan Williams gives to all finalists and winners. Enjoy the Aussie Open, which commences on ESPN2 in aboutten minutes.

Good read & nice trophy. Did you have rallies or did he keep the points short?

Steve; the points were short early because I couldn’t handle the firepower but then I got more comfortable and there were a few amazing points, some of the best I ever played. He bludgeoned every single ball, the one time he tried a drop shot in the second set it didn’t even reach the net )
