Andy Murray coaching update, via Ben Jacobs in London

By Ben Jacobs

At a press conference yesterday in London, Andy Murray announced that he will be working with Darren Cahill and Sven Groeneveld as he begins his clay court season in Monte Carlo next week. The search for a full time coach is still ongoing, but Murray has made the wise decision to engage with two highly experienced coaches who are part of his sponsors, Adidas, player development program.

Cahill has previously worked with grand slam winners Lleyton Hewitt and Andre Agassi while Groenveld has experience with the likes of former U.S. open finalist Greg Rusedski. In fact Rusedski told me via his twitter account today that “It can only help to have two very experienced coaches and if the respect is there things should improve”. That was in answer to my question as to whether or not Murray’s confidence could be restored for the clay court season by his new, albeit temporary coaches.

I support Murray’s choice not to rush in and choose a coach simply for the sake of it. Clearly it is a highly important decision, particularly at this time in his career and taking time and care over the selection will yield better benefits. It’s not just about finding a big name, it is also about finding a man with the right personality who will have the time and dedication to accompany the Scot on his travels around the world for more than 30 weeks of the year.

This seems like the perfect move by Murray. Cahill and Sven G are two of the very best coaches/tennis minds. Start a temporary relationship, see how it goes and take it from there, no pressure, no permanency. Two new voices to hear and learn from. Brilliant move. This could be like Lennox Lewis after being KOed by McCall, split with Pepe Correa and hired the best Emanuel Steward. The rest is history. I can see Sven and Cahill having a very positive impact on Murray who is basically getting up from possibly the lowest moment of his pro career. Good job Ben and nice connect with Big G Rusedski, one of my favorite guys in tennis.

Thanks Scoop, I agree, very smart move. Even a couple of wins on the clay of Monte Carlo will give him a boost, he doesn’t have to have a great tournament, he’s not even expected to.

I agree. Cahill, in my mind, is one of the best coaches out there. But alas, I am still not convinced Murray has the sagesse to take anyone’s advice. Hopefully, somewhere along the line, Murray is also seeing a sports psychologist.

    Ta for the update.
