Alarcon Remembers Beating Spadea At Wimbledon

Today I went to hit at GT Bray Park in Bradenton with a friend Peter Carpenter and another friend was there, Felipe Alarcon, with his brother and coach Andres Alarcon, who played Davis Cup for Ecuador.

When asked who is the best player he ever played, Andres Alarcon said, “Vince Spadea. Do you remember him? I beat him at Wimbledon qualies. He was 20 in the world.”

Alarcon beat Spadea at the 1994 Wimbledon qualies second round 75 64. Spadea had just turned pro the year before and was the 19 seed in qualies. Alarcon lost in the third round of qualies to American Jonathan Canter 75 62 57 76.

Spadea reached 18 in the world in 2005 and won one ATP singles title in Scottsdale, AZ, beating Nicolas Kiefer in the final. Spadea earned career wins vs Andre Agassi, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Marat Safin, Yevgeny Kafelnikov.

Alarcon’s best ranking was in 1991 when he reached 351 in the world.

When asked his memories of how he beat Spadea, Alarcon paused and stated, “He was cocky. That’s why I beat him.”

Alarcon says he has bumped into Spadea a few times since their Wimbledon encounter, and Spadea was very nice and friendly to him. They last chatted at Miami Open when it was played at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne.

Alarcon, a good friend of Nick Bollettieri, coached at the IMG Academy. He also previously coached current ATP no. 1 in doubles Austin Krajicek. He competed in Davis Cup for Ecuador in 1989 and 1990
