Brooksby and Nakashima Stun Favorites In Antwerp

The “Young Americans” continue to rise up the ATP rankings with headline making results.

Today in Antwerp, Brandon Nakashima demolished world no. 26 and five-time ATP singles champion Alex deMinaur 64 60.

Then Jenson Brooksby outdueled world no. 25 Reilly Opelka and two time ATP singles champ by a score of 64 64.

Opelka was so disconcerted by Brooksby’s high level of play that he was overheard muttering on court that Brooksby is “the best player I’ve played in my whole life.” Keep in mind, Opelka lost to Rafael Nadal at Rome Masters this year 64 64 in their lone clash. Opelka has also played Daniil Medvedev five times (1-4), Dominic Thiem (0-1), Stefanos Tsitsipas (1-1), and Stan Wawrinka (1-0)

Nakashima is now 13-9 on the year and ranked 79, Brooksby, ranked no. 70, is 12-6. Both are on course to play in the NEXT GEN Finals in Milan.

Opelka is currently the highest ranked American in the ATP at no. 25 but close behind him are Taylor Fritz at 30 and John Isner at 29.

With the steady, stunning results and fierce determination of Brooksby, Nakashima and Sebi Korda, who is ranked 38 in the world, it’s looking very likely that a major balance of power shift in American tennis is going to happen in 2022.
