Friday Sony, Team Bresnik Goes Down

2103-161954[1] Rough day for the Gunther Bresnik Brigade, Dominic Thiem lost a close battle with Robredo 46 67, blowing a break up late in the second. But his flashy backhand winners, forehand strikes, big serves and clutch volleys wowed the crowd. Also, it was interesting to see Ryan Harrison arrive at this match in the middle of the second set, presumably to see Thiem, who defeated Rosol in the first round. Harrison lost in straight sets to Rosol at the Dallas Challenger last week. Continue to read full article...

Thursday Sony, Mats on Fed Rafa Rivalry

givebook It's always interesting to listen to Mats Wilander talk tennis. My desk at the media center is a few seats down from L-Equipe of France and the reporter did an interview with Mats around dinner time about the Federer-Rafa rivalry. Here is just a portion what Mats said (I couldn't write it all down because I was transcibing my recorder of other interviews): "I want to see Federer win. Because I know if Federer wins he has to play a great, great match." Continue to read full article...

Sony Wednesday, It’s Thiem To Shine Bright

thiems You know the way we roll here at the Sony, free style observations on Weds, no order, just free flow, here we go... The Murray-Lendl split seems a shock at first reading on Twitter. I overhear a Brit writer in the pressroom, "Lendl did his job... we may never know the real reasons... Murray is such a complicated person." I think it makes sense. Murray is complete now after winning Wimbledon, the monkey is off his back, the lifelong goal was achieved. Murray does not have that same freakish burning hunger to be Number One. He needs a new voice, new direction, to shake things up. Continue to read full article...

Sony Monday

jiriv I arrive at the Sony at just after 2. The first player I see when picking up credentials is Madison Keys and a friend as they walk by my Chrysler convertible. Then a few steps away Gulbis walks by with an adidas cap. Spontaneously I say to him, "Keep doing it your way," He replies quietly with a hint of a smile, "Always." Continue to read full article...

Player Biofile: Kaila Cochran

kailac I spotted this feisty little player at a duel meet in Delray Beach, she caught my eye with her feistiness, friendly smile, footspeed, consistency and propensity to use the famous Hewitt "Come on" for self-exhortation purposes.
