Newport Quarterfinals

The Hall of fFame Open quarterfinals are set…

John Isner vs. Matt Ebden
Ugo Humbert vs. Ilya Ivashka
Mischa Zverev vs. Marcel Granollers
Alex Bublik vs. Tennys Sandgren

John Isner struggled to a 64 67 63 win against Kamil Majchzak of Poland and after said he’s still trying to regain his Miami Open finalist confidence which was dwindled by the three month foot injury hiatus. Isner’ s movement is not fully recovered. He will face tricky Matt Ebden.

Tennys Sandgren absolutely annihilated Adrian Mannarino 64 61 with an arsenal spearheaded by big serving, and varied baseline sharpshooting. At times Sandgren looks like a bearded Santoro with his frequent use of slices, especially the forehand. Mannarino, a dangerous player on these grass courts, was never in the match.

Next up for Sandgren in the Quarterfinal is his 2019 arch rival Alex Bublik. This will be their fourth meeting of the year. Bublik won the first two in Miami and Monterrey both in third set tiebreakers, with Sandgren blowing match points. Sandgren avenged Bublik in three sets a month ago. Bublik beat Viktor Troicki yesterday.

The other quarters feature rising Frenchman Humbert vs Ivashka and veteran Granollers vs Mischa Zverev. Humbert upset last year’s finalist Rankumar Ramanathan and Ivashka rolled past Chris Eubanks, who stunned defending champion Steve Johnson in the first round.

Zverev zapped out Guido Andreozzi. Granollers eliminated third seed Jordan Thompson of Australia.
