Venus Salutes Leylah In Montreal

Leylah Fernandez may be struggling since playing in the US Open final two years ago, but her energy and attitude have made a very positive impression on Venus Williams.

The 43 year old former WTA world no. 1 likes what she sees in the 20 year old currently ranked 81 in the world.

“She has the greatest attitude on the court. Unbelievable competitor,” said Williams after losing in Montreal at Omnium Banque Nationale to Madison Keys 63 75. “I think she’s so good for the game. When you watch her play, you feel like you’re a part of it. You feel like you’re a part of something. She gives you that energy, you want to root for her. Every time I see her on the court I’m always rooting for her because you feel something for that.”

The Montreal-born Fernandez was ranked outside the top 60 when she stunned the tennis world by reaching the US Open final in 2021. But since that highpoint, the Canadian hasn’t been a factor or force in singles and her career high ranking of no. 13 is now at a mediocre 81. Fernandez played in the French Open doubles final with American Taylor Townsend, losing to the champions Su-Wei Hsieh and Xinyu Wang 61 67 16.

Williams is 2-5 since returning to action this year in her five tournament appearances via wildcard entry. She is ranked 527.

Fernandez plays American qualifier Peyton Stearns in the first round in Montreal.
