Sander Groen: First And Last Pro Matches

By Scoop Malinowski

After a few years hiatus, I am resuming the old feature asking former pro players ATP and WTA if they remember their first and last professional matches. Here is former Dutch ATP player Sander Groen, who helped Roger Federer win his first ATP title in Segovia, Spain in doubles…

First Professional Match: Was a singles match in the Dutch Satellite against a Romanian called Bucur. I don’t recall the year but it must have been 1986 or 1987. I would say the score was 57 16. His first name was something like Laurentiu. He has no ITF men’s profile so he never had a ranking.

Last Pro Match: A doubles match in Sunrise (FL) Futures in 2019. With Kyle Koch against two Argentineans Alejandro Gonzalez and Augustin Velotti, we lost 46 64 2-10. I pulled a calf muscle in the beginning of the second set and we still won the second set while I was only able to limp [smiles].
