Observing Serena

Just watched some of Serena vs. Roberta Vinci. Serena takes the first set 62 and holds serve to start the second. She skips going to her chair for a quick drink like most all the other players do, and walks slowly in a trance like state of focus around the far net post. Serena also does not use a towel behind the baseline, in fact her towel is at her chair.

Serena, wearing a purple Nike skirt and a blue headband with white and blue Nike I believe high tops, is looking really really good here actually. Moving well, serving bullets and she is extremely amped up for this match and obviously this tournament. After she breaks Vinci to go up 2-love in the second, she screams an explosive Come on with a fist pump for exclamation. Serena is taking this early round confrontation very seriously. She is in perfect control of her emotions and looks in prime form, at least today vs. the Italian, not quite stallionette, how about trialhorse?

Another observation about Serena is when she serves she does not walk over to the ballkids to accept balls, she only take about three or four steps from the middle of the baseline, towards the kids. So as to minimize the amount of steps and mileage she adds on to her odometer. The effect is of a very contained and controlled high horse power engine that is not about to waste any of it’s power on such trifles as going to the post office to mail a letter or to the ballkids to get service balls.

Serena is holding serve easily, she’s about to go up 4-1 on Vinci. The crowd is sparse and the Serena fans are also controlled in their expressions, save for a “Come on Serena” or “Get it back Serena” scattered here and there.

Serena takes care of business 62 61. A very interesting rematch with Sam Stosur awaits in the next round.
