Diego Schwartzman is 11 in the world!

diego schwartzman

By Scoop Malinowski

One of the most astonishing achievements in modern tennis is the almost unbelievable fact that Diego Schwartzman is now ranked no. 11 in the world.

The five-foot-seven-inch, 25 year old Argentine was not an exceptional junior. He did not take the ATP World Tour by storm in his late teens, early 20s. But somehow the diminutive gladiator extraordinaire has slayed 89% percent of the professional tennis goliaths, and etched his name into the annals of tennis.

My first memory of Schwartzman is four years ago when he played a 1R night match on Ashe against Djokovic. He was an unknown, ranked about 100 in the world. But he impressed everyone by showing he could compete well with the ultimate elite pantheon of tennis.

Though he lost in three lopsided sets score-wise, that performance was no fluke. Schwartzman showed something that night and he gained from the experience. And he kept rising.

The following year 2015, Schwartaman drew Nadal 2R on Ashe and lost a battle 76 63 75.

Established now as a dangerous top 50 player, Schwartzman and won his first title in 2016 in Istanbul, terrorizing Dimitrov in the final with a miraculous comeback win (from a set and 2-5 down in the second) that so profoundly wounded the ego of Dimitrov that the Bulgarian whiz destroyed his racquets in the third set and had to be defaulted. At this point it was clearly evident: Schwartzman iss a very special competitor.

The Argentine has also fared well in his four cracks at Roger Federer. In 2015 Schwartzman won the first set from Federer in Istanbul semis and finally lost 75 in the third. Last year in Shanghai Diego lost to Fed 76 64.

The good results kept coming. Schwartzman extended Djokovic to five sets at Roland Garros last year in the round of 32. He won the first set vs Nadal this year at the French Open QF.

He won his third career title this year in Rio vs Verdasco.

2013 was the year Schwartzman emerged into the ATP from Futures and Challengers. He played his first ATP main draw in Vina Del Mar, losing to eventual champ Horacio Zeballos in !r. Then he qualified in Acapulco and lost to Nadal. His first ATP main draw win came in Buenos Aires against Thomaz Bellucci.

Last year I became a big believer in the genius of Schwartzman in Miami where I watched him destroy one of his idols David Ferrer 61 62 on Court 2. It was the worst beating I ever saw Ferrer suffer. Schwartzman literally out-Ferrered David Ferrer and ran him around the baseline like a yo-yo.

Schwartzman’s game is tricky. He has a low center of gravity and can move like a cat and when he gets to the ball he has uncanny pop on his shots. He can cause damage off both wings. He’s the ultimate fighter in tennis today. Just watch Nadal express respect at the net after he plays Schwartzman. Nadal’s demeanor is of 100% pure awe and respect and adoration. It’s like Nadal just can’t believe the 141 pound junior welterweight is able to compete so vigorously against the heavyweights of tennis.

Nobody can believe it, because it’s just not possible but somehow against all odds it’s happening. And somehow, some way, Diego Schwartzman is ranked no. 11 in the world.

Diego Schwartzman is the ninth wonder of the world. And I defy you to name a more amazing player today than Diego Schwartman.

“Nadal’s demeanor is of 100% pure awe and respect and adoration. It’s like Nadal just can’t believe the 141 pound junior welterweight is able to compete so vigorously against the heavyweights of tennis.”

Oh for crying out loud. Nadal has been close friends with Schwartzman since he came on tour – Pico (Juan Monaco) is Diego’s mentor and Rafa and Pico are best of friends so Rafa well knows Diego’s capabilities and they have practiced together for years. Rafa was hardly awed by him when they played against each other and has often talked about how dangerous Diego is even if you didn’t notice him until Miami.

For me, honestly, Sam Querrey is a more amazing player than Schwartzman. Sam is no. 13 and if you looked at that guy, especially when he first hit the tour, you’d say, that guy looks like he’s unathletic and there’s no way this guy’s going to be knocking on the door of Top 10.

And Sock because he’s awful and he’s somehow still no. 15.

querrey was a touted junior, won Kalamazoo, turned down USC and had instant success in the ATP, I still remember his first TV match vs Nadal and he was competitive. Schwartzman came outta nowhere and is a foot shorter than Sam. Sam has one of the biggest weapons in tennis – he once served ten straight aces vs Blake when he used Prince, I was told his Babolat is not as good for his serve.

Jackson I see awe by Rafa for Diego, how can anyone not be awed by Schwartzman?

  • catherine · July 1, 2018 at 9:37 am

Anyone who’s beaten him I suppose, Scoop.

  • Michael in UK · July 1, 2018 at 11:29 am

Thanks for this great post Scoop. I agree with you, Diego’s story is fabulous and very exceptional.
And in interviews I have seen, he comes across as a decent and and humble guy.
    Best wishes for Wimbledon Diego!

Michael, Schwartzman is a super nice guy too, it came across in our Biofile in Miami, very likeable down to earth regular guy, made me a big fan that day. He is the most amazing guy in tennis today, now that Sandgren has cooled off and Victor Estrella has faded somewhat.

  • Micharl in Uk · July 1, 2018 at 6:11 pm

Thanks Scoop, the Diego biofile is great, i like that comment about “not going inside )famous players) space”.

Now only 12 hours until start of Wimbledon! Going to be a great 2 weeks!

Thanks Michael, Schwartzman has a good sporting respect for the top guys off the court but on the court he’s no pushover for anyone. You give him a centimeter he will take a mile.

Some more gossip is Venus Williams dating some young rich guy – it started around the Aussie Open.

I believe this relationship is SERIOUS and explains Venus’ poor results this year. Your official Duke prediction is that she will marry the 25-year-old since he has a fortune at his disposal.

  • catherine · July 2, 2018 at 2:23 am

This is ridiculous. Why would Venus Williams need to marry a 25 year old for his money ?

And her poor results are most likely because she’s at the end of her career and other players are passing her.

I can’t imagine where you’re getting your gossip from.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 2, 2018 at 7:41 am

Good luck to Venus, she will be a good catch for any man.

  • catherine · July 2, 2018 at 8:02 am

I’m sure Venus will be a good ‘catch’ for any man; I’m also sure she won’t be marrying for money.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 2, 2018 at 8:54 am

    No upsets so far…

  • catherine · July 2, 2018 at 9:24 am

Sloane Stephens out to Vekic ?

  • catherine · July 2, 2018 at 9:41 am

Federer in Uniqlo ! Kept well secret that one.

Not exactly an upset but Petko bts Zhang in a match where Andrea served 10 dfs and made 48 unforced errors. And is ranked 60 below her so maybe that was a teeny upset 🙂

  • catherine · July 2, 2018 at 9:54 am

Isn’t anyone following Wimbledon ? Stephen’s exit was a massive loss. Donna’s coach is of course ex-coach of You Know Who. But maybe Donna’s also been practising with Stan.

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 2, 2018 at 10:49 am

To clarify, Venus won’t marry for money. The reason for Venus to marry someone rich is clearly so that guy isn’t dependent on her.

The poor results are because she is so focused on making this relationship work that tennis takes a back seat though that is just my speculation. It seems serious.

Sloane getting crushed by Wawrinka’s gal pal is really stunning.

  • catherine · July 2, 2018 at 11:09 am

Sloane didn’t play any warm-up grass events and that probably was a mistake.

  • catherine · July 2, 2018 at 11:21 am

Interesting that Vekic is working with Zlatko Novkovic on her fitness. Novkovic also worked with Ivanovic at some point. I assume Torben Beltz is still her main coach.

Her serve has improved a lot. I used to think Donna was a pretty mediocre player but I’m having to change my mind.

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 2, 2018 at 11:31 am

The other big story at SW19 today was Fed wearing Uniqlo, a story I broke here on T-P a while back that this would happen. It’s a curious move for Nike to not re-sign the GOAT but they know what they are doing.

Anyway congrats to me for this bit of gossip coming true- as most of my call-outs do! It’s stunning to the tennis world.

  • catherine · July 2, 2018 at 11:46 am

I mentioned that above Duke – you must have missed it 🙂

I imagine uniqlo have given Federer an extended contract and Nike were not prepared to do that. I did see the rumour a while ago, here and other places. Difficult to keep these things quiet.

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 2, 2018 at 1:06 pm

Right Catherine, it shocked all of us. Interesting that Nike is discounting his merchandise. I wonder if you are a Fed fan, do you now buy the discounted Nike gear or the new stuff from Japan?

Fed also claims that Nike doesn’t own the “RF” initials but he may have a battle with Nike’s lawyers over that one. Imagine the smooth, suave Fed getting fleeced out of his own initials by the Swoosh? You expect tennis players not be savvy in business but not the great Fed.

  • Joe Blow · July 2, 2018 at 1:32 pm

Watch the Nike guys blow off Laver Cup. Nadal pulled out already, replaced by Djokovic on Team Europe

  • Scoopmalinowski · July 2, 2018 at 1:47 pm

Fed gets $300m from uniqlo, guess is fed will play well beyond 2020. Will be interesting how Fed fans take this out on Nike. Now we wonder when Rafas nike deal expires? Stan looking like Stanimal again. Serena looked good, weird to see her wearing brown stockings. Wonder when Serena nike contract expires? Nike is known to be cheap giving tennis magazines sample shoes to review. Time for a coach change for Dimitrov?

  • Hartt · July 2, 2018 at 2:14 pm

Someone said Rafa’s contract with Nike ends in Dec. It will be intersting to see how Nike handles that.

  • Joe Blow · July 2, 2018 at 2:38 pm

Johnny Mac changes rackets every hour, but never left Nike…35 plus years

  • Joe Blow · July 2, 2018 at 2:44 pm

Read that for Uniqlo it’s all about Fed representing at the 2020 Olympics, which i’m guessing is in Japan.
On the broadcast they said Fed picked up Nike gear pre Wimbledon. Wonder how, and when they told Phil Knight..

  • Duke Carnoustie · July 2, 2018 at 3:00 pm

A new low for Grigor Dimitrov as he loses to Wawrinka who isn’t close to being in form.

Now we know why women like Serena and Shazza broke up with hi – because they are champions and knew he would never be.

  • Scoop Malinowski · July 2, 2018 at 4:33 pm

Hartt, Nike has a history of chiseling. They chised Fed, Sampras, Agassi at the end. Surely they will chisel Rafa and Serena too.
