Strange But True Tennis Tales: A Very Bad Bet

wbryanbrosA former ATP world no 1 player was in Washington DC eating lunch at the Legg Mason player cafe when he was challenged with a wacky wager idea by an opposing coach. ‘I bet you fifty bucks Mike Bryan beats Max Mirnyi.” The Two-time Grand Slam champion replied: “What’s up (coach). You don’t like money?”

The friendly bet was on and of course the unranked wildcard singles player Bryan got trounced by “The Beast” to the tune of 6-3 6-1. Still it was a good run for Bryan who won two rounds in the 2003 Legg main draw (defeated Noam Okun and WC Andrew Carlsen) and with the two wins suddenly had an ATP singles ranking of 550.

The already millionaire winner of the wager was on his way to the stadium court to play Mardy Fish when he unexpectedly crossed paths with his debtor, and then stopped in his tracks and dropped his bag and demanded payment on the spot. He collected his winnings.
