Tennis in my new Muhammad Ali book

MAPC Yes, tennis did factor into my new book about Muhammad Ali: Portrait Of A Champion. No, The Greatest did not play tennis or associate much with the tennis world. In fact, the only time I ever saw Ali connected to tennis in any way was a photo of him together with Bjorn Borg in the late 70s, which was the height of each of their popularity. Ali had an influence on several figures from the tennis world. Jimmy Connors told me in his Biofile about how he loved Ali and would drive ... Continue to read full article...

Talkin Tennis with DY in Delray

560852_2975563784419_991342674_a I asked Donald Young some questions after his Delray Beach Open win vs. Alejandro Gonzalez in the mixed zone: Question: Donald, some of our readers love your game but they think you are too careful with your return game, playing it safe always. Your comment? DY: "Last week I played doubles and I was hitting quite well. But today (yesterday) it's tough to hit out (very windy) and I just didn't want to make stupid mistakes. But it's definitely something I'm working on Continue to read full article...

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA I watched the first set of Karlovic vs. Kokkinakis at the Delray Beach Open presented by the Venetian Las Vegas, won by Dr. Ivo in a tiebreak. Every point was basically the same, if it was not an ace or service winner, each player hit two or three shots, then either a winner or error. No point went more than five or six shots. It was a good set but I knew the second set would be the same. So after the set I left the stadium to stretch my legs and who is on the practice court - the one and only Leander Paes. Fixing Isner

isner Mats Wilander said "You always have to try to change your game and improve something..." Wise words from a wise tennis man. Here's the full quotes Wilander said to journalist Paul Fein while talking about his former player Marat Safin in 2002 when he lost the Aussie Open to Johansson... Mats Wilander: He (Safin) learns a lot from losing. If he wins he has the confidence of someone who wins a Grand Slam title and he's not going to change his game. Whereas you always have to try to change your game and improve something. Continue to read full article...

Youth Movement In Delray Beach

tkokk It’s been 27 years since Rick Macci took on the 10-year-old Jennifer Capriati and helped her construct one of the most lethal games in women’s tennis. At only 12, Capriati won the USTA National Girls’ Junior 18’s tournament, making her the youngest player ever to win the event, a record that still stands. Five years later, Richard Williams chose Macci over Nick Bollettieri to train his daughters, Venus and Serena, and Macci, by many people’s account, took two unpolished girls and put them on the road to superstardom. Day One Delray Beach and Dolgopolov

delraytoday Arrive at the Delray Beach tournament for I think the seventh or eighth year in a row. Denis Kudla notches an important win over Lukas Lacko, 63 64. ATP level wins for Kudla have been few and far between. But he impressively dismissed the respected Lacko on stadium court. Next up Alexander Dolgopolov overcame some adversity and defeated the Guillermo Canas coached Teymuraz Gabashvili 76 63. Dolgo now sports Joma attire and shoes. He's coming off a meniscus knee injury in Australia where he had to see nine doctors in three days. He played Rio last year but opted to play the hard courts in Delray this year, his preferred surface, to regain points. Continue to read full article...

Delray Beach ATP Begins

167354_135978029798728_7951174_n This has always been one of the highlight events of the season for Tennis-prose.com. Outside perhaps of the US Open and Newport, we have covered this event more than any other tournament on the schedule. It's a classic smaller event located in the alluring town of Delray Beach, just a few steps from the main street area and no more than a seven minute walk from the Atlantic Ocean. hewitt By Chris Chaffee Ever since high school my hero has been Australian tennis player Lleyton Hewitt. Lleyton Hewitt is one of the best competitors the sport has ever seen. Every time he stepped onto the court, he wore his heart on his sleeve. Hewitt also helped me learn that winning is not everything. It is the fight that matters. “The essential thing is not to have won but to have fought well. The thrill of the fight. That you keep fighting and fighting and keep coming back, you will never lose or be defeated.” Hewitt's inspiration in the fight and giving your best still motivates me to this day.
