    The Tournament:

The Australian Open is the first of the four Grand Slam tennis events of the year and has been staged since 1905. Prior to 1988 the tournament was played on grass. Since 1988 two types of hardcourt surfaces have been used at Melbourne Park (formely known as Flinders Park) - Rebound Ace to 2007 and then Plexicushion.

Attendances at the Australian Open are second only to the US Open and the showcourts are the Rod Laver Arena, Hisense Arena and the refurbished Margaret Court Arena. All are equipped with retractable roofs.

    About Melbourne:

Melbourne is the state capital of Victoria in Queensland and regularly features in the top ranks of the "most livable" cities in the world. It is the second largest city in Australia (after Sydney) with a population of just over 4.5 million.

Founded in 1835, The metropolis is located on the large natural bay of Port Phillip and expands into the hinterlands towards the Dandenong and Macedon mountain ranges, Mornington Peninsula and Yarra Valley.

At the city's centre is the modern Federation Square development, with plazas, bars, and restaurants by the Yarra River. In the Southbank area, the Melbourne Arts Precinct is the site of Arts Centre Melbourne – a performing arts complex – and the National Gallery of Victoria, with Australian and indigenous art.

People are writing Wawrinka off, but he's got a pretty easy section. I just don't think Thiem is much of a threat off clay and once Stan gets to him he'll have played three matches - and that assumes Thiem makes it to the 4R; I could see him losing to a Mannarino. Of course then Stan has to face Novak or Sascha, and I expect him to lose to either one.

Grigor vs. Kyrgios (or "Kyrgitrov") or Novak vs. Sascha are the most interesting 4R matches to me. Goffin vs. del Potro could be interesting.

DelPo is a top 16 seed and a former GS champ. Tough to label him as dark horse.

On a more serious note, I think after the big 3 there are no serious favorites or contenders. Stan DP Kyrgios, Grigor. All dark horses.

I AGREE..JMDP can be a label a dark horse.. Last year was his best effort in 5-7 years. Otherwise he hasnt really been a serious contender.. Good call Denis

I think he's a dark horse, too. If he and Goffin both make it to the 4R I'd take DelPo over Goffin. I think DelPo sees an opportunity to get back into the top 5 and become a threat at every Slam. He's 29 but he's spent 4 or 5 years injured and time waits for no one. He has zero points to defend at the AO and only 780 points to defend before the USO. If he can make it to the QF or better his ranking would be in the Top 8. If he wins he'd be Top 3 or 4. He has nothing to lose and everything to gain. I imagine that makes him super-motivated and super-dangerous.The bottom line to me is that he is much more of a Top 5 player than Dimitrov, Cilic, Thiem, Goffin, etc.

Well, Thiem surely is not a threat outside clay just yet -- my bet is that the will be at some point down the road. He might not even get to Mannarino, his first round match is Pella, who I posted a while ago that would be terrible first round for anyone -- too bad it was for a player I happen to like. Actually I think Pella is the one who will survive untill R4.

There is a category of pretenders in between the categories of contenders and dark horses.
Nick, Grigor, Stan, Goffin, JMDP, Cilic and Sasha all belong in the "pretenders" category, IMO.

If Fed wins, he would be tied for most AO wins in open era with Novak.

Also, that would mean he is either in sole possession or tied for most wins in open era in three of the four GSs.

Tomic loses in the last round of quals and so will not play in AO for the first time in ten years. So, is this good enough to teach him the lesson or does he need more tutors.

Novak, Bhambri, Popsicle and Brown are some notables who qualified.
