Eugenie Bouchard: "It was a very tough decision to play Challengers. It was very humbling to play Challenger events because it is so different than WTA events. You dont even need a pass to get anywhere. My team and my coaches didnt want me to play but I forced the issue. I wanted to punish myself a lil bit. Go see that people have to grind and work through. I skipped the whole Challenger scene because from juniors I was playing WTAs and Grand Slams. I didnt even win the tournament there because there are great players playing those events."

Monfils and Zverev were having a good intense practice. Lots of hitting, lots of points. One observer was Sekou Bangoura who would later make his ATP main draw singles debut hours later vs Marius Copil. Qualifier Sekou told me Monfils is his guy, his inspiration. My first Citi Open was a memorable one. It was 2007 and it was the first time I ever saw John Isner, or the first time I ever heard of the name John Isner.
He was on a practice court on day one, looking like an NBA center but equipped with mesmerizing tennis talent. Of course, Isner was born as an ATP star that week, winning five matches all by third set tiebreakers vs Henman, B Becker, Odesnik, Haas, Monfils in the SF before finally losing in the final 46 67 to Andy Roddick.
