Zverev Defends His Elite Status

Alexander Zverev is the ATP world no. 2 and has earned over $52m prize money from playing tennis. Like most players he’s endured a stretch of substandard results this year at age 28 and some tennis media have even tagged him as the worst world no. 2 ever, ahead of Petr Korda, Tommy Haas, Michael Chang. Zverev, the winner of 24 AT titles (one this year) set the record straight and gave a little lecture to the tennis media in Rome…

Zverev: “World No. 1? It would be nice. I don’t know. I have not been there. I believe I will. So we’ll see how it goes. I do think the media also loves to put players down, right? I had a bad two months before Munich, right? I didn’t play great tennis before Munich. All of a sudden I’m like the worst world No. 2 in the world ever. I don’t deserve to be there (at no. 2). Like, I’m there because I won tournaments. I’m there because I have results. The ranking system doesn’t lie. You get points for winning matches, you get points for winning titles. Yes, I know I didn’t play up to my standard. I know I didn’t play up to what I wanted to do. But neither did Carlos. Then he won Monte Carlo. There are periods in a player’s career… Do you think Novak is happy with his results? Do you think Carlos is happy with his results? I’m not happy with my results. At the end of the day in big matches, big moments, I still believe the top players will rise. And I still believe that I am going to find my tennis for the biggest tournaments.”

Zverev has compiled a 21-8 match record in 2025 and 484-206 since turning pro in 2013.

Was Goan the most dangerous #2 ? Perhaps.

I’m actually not gonna dump on Gold Chainz this week. Everything has been said. Can he prove everyone wrong and win a slam? If so, I’ll be the first to say I got it wrong.

All no. 2s were great. To say who was the worst no. 1 or worst Grand Slam champion is a ridiculously stupid topic to create. All 1s and 2s and Grand Slam champions are great, they all had to play great and be great to get to those lofty statuses. For any tennis media to start this silly discussion is a disservice to the sport. They do the same nonsense in boxing, who was the worst to win the Heavyweight title.

Surely Taylor Fritz is the greatest #4 of all times. 🙂

Ferrer, Todd Martin, Rusedski were the goat 4s.

Do you know if MOratoglou is building a tennis center in Hackensack???

Steve, it’s been delayed for years, started, stopped. I know the former architect, last year it was in limbo, haven’t heard anything recently. With the growth of pickleball in the area and all the other clubs in the area, the rough economy, it’s a very risky bold move to build a new tennis center in the Hack. If Osaka can start winning majors again with Mouratoglou in the box, that would surely help the cause.

Thanks for the update. Would be very interesting if he/they go through with it.

Mouratoglou supposedly has billions from family wealth, he’s also starting a big academy in Tampa FL, another bold move because there are so many academies in the Tampa area. But the Mouratoglou name is the biggest right now in academy tennis in the world.
